Something which I do now (after losing a couple things at the beach) is a final check after I actually turn the car on. Pack everything up, turn car on, get out, complete check around car perimeter and roof, then leave. Good luck.

I always put my board right behind the car, so I would never leave it, only crunch it. To me that's better than the thought of someone finding and keeping it.
