Santa Cruz - Steamer Lane

Surf Reports for Steamer Lane (SCSL)

yesterday: It was fun in the morning. The peak is just too tight. Too many groms and locals ripping. And one local doing these sic 360s. Other than that it was decent fun day.

Fun out of season WNW ground swell coming through today. Shoulders were a bit fat, but some solid overhead waves coming through middle peak. Should be some leftovers worth a road trip tomorrow if conditions stay sloppy up north.

Absolutely gorgeous day down in Santa Cruz. Swell was a little soft coming through, maybe waist to chest with the occasional chest+ standout, but plenty of fun rides for a small group of surfers. Surfed 11am to 2pm and the tide was draining things considerably by the time I got out. But the sun, the dolphins, the seals ... awesome day all round.

Thursday 11am - Steamer Lane, good+ surfing

Seems like everyone figured the wind and rain would be on it this morning, but nooooo mother nature delivered the goods! No rain until about 8:30, and ocean surface was clean and smooth. Solid 6-8' bombs at the point and 4-6' line drives at Indicator's. Two incredible rides from Indicator's to inside Cowell's will keep me stoked for the rest of the day.

Epic. Check the pic, it was outta sight! Well - epic may be a strong word, but here is an idea of the crowd from monday afternoon. (this is joke post btw, it was fun, but i thought a peek at cowells would be humorous).

Hit it while the tide was high and dropping. Stayed out for 3 hours because you just can't get enough 8' bombs when there's only 15 guys in the water. Super fun morning. Chop was getting on it when I got out.

Wednesday 4pm - Steamer Lane, great surfing

I thought I would post a pic or two from Sunday at the Lane. Quite uncrowded for the size, as the NSSA only took up first peak. Worth the drive down Hwy 1 this weekend as all the breaks were firing.

slightly wind affected, very longboard affected. paddled out, got a SH right, spent most of my time avoiding longboards flying down the line. obviously brought the wrong equipment to this spot (5-10 quad). next time i'll be showing up with some massive foam, so i can work my way around the legions of junior high kids, ucsc students and retired state workers.

The tide was high, the waves were small and warbly, but I had that bitch allllllllllllllll to myself from 3:30 - 5.

Started on the east side this morning. Shoulder highish, glassy n' clean, and stupidly crowded. I sat for over and an hour only got scraps. After lunch I moved over to SL. As expected, it was also crowded, but surprisingly not as much as the other side of town. Size there was substantially larger with the occasional set going overhead at the peak. A lil' bit of wind on it and some bumpy drops by the cliff due to backwash, but mostly pretty damn good. Scored a couple super fun and long ones including a standout set wave due to a dude taking off too deep and blowing it (your loss is my gain, hombre) that made the morning's disappointment worth the while. The native crew was absolutely tearing the place to shreds. Watching some of the talent out there just added to the fun.

Shoulder high to a pinch overhead and pretty clean. Sets were lully. Grom Connery and crew were on it, but the atmosphere was mellow. Scored a few fun set waves with patience. Nat Young was doing a photo shoot and lofting airs on the closeout left in the little cove by the jump off rock. Good times.

Thursday 11am - Steamer Lane, fair+ surfing

Started at Co####s early this am and got a bunch of 2' waves before the spring break surf classes and kiddos covered the entirety of the cove. Then paddled over to Steamer and got a few more waves before calling it. Typical south swell with a good wait between sets, but there's definitely fun to be had!
