The Aggro Police

Rant - The Aggro Police

The winds were blowing in SF this morning, so I headed down the coast to hit a more Pleasurable spot. Within 5 minutes of paddling out, before I had gone for a single wave, this guy paddles up to me and grunts, "You surfed here before?" "Yes," I said, because I had, many times. He said, "Well, you better not trample me," sticking close and giving me the stinkeye. A few minutes later, I caught my first wave. I didn't drop in on anyone, and had a good clean ride. When I paddled back to the lineup, the same guy paddles up to me again and says, "You don't belong here. I think you better leave," and starts splashing me. I calmly explained that I was surfing respectfully, and had no plans to leave. All the same, it put a damper on what should have been a relaxing, sunny surf day.

Now I don't care if you've been surfing a break your whole life, if you were beaten as a child, or if you didn't eat your Wheaties that morning. I am too stoked on surfing to put up with one more minute of this kind of aggro nonsense. So here's what I propose:

Let's start a surfer version of a community watch. If someone gets aggro or local on you, post specifics about that person (what they look like, what they ride), and your experience on this site. It'll be like when they used to publicly shame someone by sticking them in the stockade in the town square. At the very least, anyone who is buddies with that person will know what a jerk their friend is.

I'll go first. The guy who pulled that crap on me today was probably in his 40's, red O'Neill chested wetsuit with a gray skullcap and a scraggly lower lip beard. Since we Stokereporters seem to like nicknames (see OLB), I'll call him Billy Goat. Or maybe Ebenezer.

So if you know Ebenezer, or just see him prowling around SC tomorrow, suggest that he sit the next session out to reflect on why he started surfing in the first place. And maybe he will get his stoke back.

What a scrooge. I imagine all the aggro surfers in the world tip poorly, drive like jerks, grab the last slice of pizza, and open a beer at a party only to have the host throw away a full beer the next day.

One of the many reasons I love NorCal so much is this salty Ebenezer hot shot is the exception... well at least north of Santa Cruz.
99.9% of the people I've encountered in the line up are stoked to share the waves and are respectful.

All of these recent articles about SC meth head surfers going to rehab, jail, or the morgue, probably explains a lot about the attitude down there.

I don't like this sort of "Ebenezer" character any more than anyone else. But I have to respectfully disagree with the notion that it would be useful to use the Interwebz to publicly shame specific people on the basis of somebody's bad experience in the lineup, particularly if it's at some localized lineup where this type of thing is par for the course. Shit happens, and it's a shame. Localism sucks balls and grown men who act like teenage "tough guys" suck the biggest, sweatiest balls of them all. But Internet vigilante-ism is not a good answer to this or any other problem. The far better course of action is just to deal with people in real life as something is happening. Tell the guy to go fuck himself. Or, if you can't hang, get out of the water.

sharkturd

Why someone would down-vote madpie's comment is beyond me. So, bumping you back to positively fourth street, dude. Some lineups just are like the wild west. It's wrong headed and in many ways simian..but, an old cliche is in order, "it is what it is". If you're easily intimidated in that sitch or not yet willing to tell an unjustified aggressor to fek off, then you must live with it or go surf another peak...and of course that is exactly what he, or she (some fat-ass chick coincidently called Assi, comes to mind) wants you to do.

Kevi

Gotta disagree with you. As much as I would have preferred to tell the guy where he could stick his attitude, noone who surfs should have to be forced into a situation that could turn into a fistfight in the water. Plus, I was solo (not crowding the lineup - another sign of respect, BTW) and didn't know if the guy had buddies who were going to gang up on me. And we're not talking about the wild west, we're talking 2nd peak of PP on a shoulder-high day. Getting out of the water or leaving lets these assholes continue to be assholes. So whether it happens on the internet or in the water, if you see someone pulling shit on someone else, get the guy's back who's taking the shit.

@Kevi, it doesn't sound like you "gotta disagree". In the end it sounds like you concur...and twice! "get the guy's back" sounds a lot like "tell an unjustified aggressor to fek off".

Kevi

Yes, I concur that I would like to tell the guy to feck off. But that's not always the safest course of action for an individual. So I'm saying everyone should tell these guys to feck off, and just maybe they will.

"Hey guys, there's a guy down in Santa Cruz who was a total dick!"
What's new?

A guy in his 40s tried to pull local cred at the second peak of a crowded point on a sunny summer Saturday? Give me a break, he's probably from Nevada. Be honest with yourself, though: If you're so upset about it that you need to go home and vent on the Internet, maybe it would have been better to just blow off some steam by telling the guy to fuck off to his face. Describing him here and trying to rally the villagers around people who upset you in the water is a waste of time. Sounds like you might be the one who needs to "get his stoke back."

This isn't a personal attack Kevi. Sorry to hear this guy bummed you out. I can definitely relate; I think this kind of thing has probably happened to just about everyone. But there has been a trend on here lately of people calling out others who upset them in the lineup, and everyone comes off sounding like a bunch of whiney bitches. Consider this: The guy who pisses any of us off in the lineup - by dropping in, or talking shit, or being in the way - is probably out there for the same reason as us, which is to have fun. He might not give a second thought to his actions, while we'll sulk and complain and feel like our session was ruined. Nobody wins. It's better to just let it go. Some people are assholes, that's just the way it is. Don't let them get you down.

Imagine a site where people went to post about drivers who cut them off on the freeway. Don't let SR turn into surfing's version of that.

btw, Tenderloin Tom, nice image. Haole to you, too!

The two foot summer mafia is out and about at SC. During the winter there watching you from the cliffs when it's over head and half. They are what they are. I just surf elsewhere on those "2-3ft" fair days. Stay stoked and stay positive. Life's short!

I almost never surf santa cruz for this very reason. The funny thing is the only places anyone has ever fucked with me in the water have been at santa cruz on a small day and at fucking linda mar of all places. I always take it, wave and apologize, then get on with life cause i just realize that these people suck, their lives suck, their attitude sucks, and they are just very sad, pathetic human piles of filth that aren't worth the clothes they put on in the morning. This guy was looking for a fight. if you gave him one, then you would be giving him what he wanted. he wanted a fight because he wanted a reason to justify his miserable attitude. good for you for not giving in to the sore temptation to beat his scraggly little drug-ridden ass into a hospital cause if you did, you would feel horrible. you would be asking yourself why you let some low-life dick-headed worthless piece of shit drag you down to his level. you know what? if someone hits you, then by all means, beat them until the blood is running down the pavement and then stomp on their back to make sure you break some of their ribs while they are down. but until that time comes, you should be prepared to go to jail for defending yourself, and have the shit turn in to a multi-year legal nightmare, your better option is to relax, let it go, and paddle off somewhere else. sounds like you did exactly the right thing. fuckin chin-beard sounds like a typical piece of filth loser, and people like that are unhappy wherever they go and whatever they do, cause everyone fucking hates them. on the other hand, a lot of people are probably very happy with you for being fair-minded, even-tempered, and having ethics. you win. in the end, loser guy will be crawling off behind a garbage can somewhere, cold and alone, to die, shivering and sobbing with bitter tears of self-pity rolling down his ugly piece of shit face cause he will once and for all realize how hated he is by the rest of the world, while you will be out on a sunny day, surrounded by friends and good vibes, feeling peaceful.

Had to do this at Starbucks yesterday. Guy came in, looking like he didn't know what to order. I was like, "yo... bro.. you ever been here before?" He sort of stared at me. "Do you know where you are right now?" I asked. He wasn't sure what to say.

Sometimes it just has to get real like that. Whether we like it or not. People have to be told.

I've seen it happen with a Frappuccino. Guy kept asking for caramel. They don't even have caramel at this store. If he'd been around he would have known this. So someone had to regulate. If you don't kooks take forever at the counter and things gets out of hand.

I dunno, PP used to seem very chill 10 years ago. In the last year or so, I've noticed a lot more "locals" from Nevada (like the chin beard) making the spot unpleasant for everyone but their two friends in the lineup. Maybe it's the meth.

Kevi, good on ya for staying cool with the chump. I think it's unlikely, though, that his violence would have escalated beyond splashing, and I bet that most (all?) other surfers nearby would have scoffed at his remarks. Even if he had punched you in the nose (and you or an onlooker had called babylon), you would likely have had the satisfaction of seeing (or at least hearing about) him being arrested for it.

Even so, I am completely down with venting on the internets, as long as real names aren't used.

I am not down with shaming people on the internet you had a dust up with. The internet has enough petty hate on it already.

You were the bigger person in the water, keep your cool and laugh it off out of the water too.

crabn415

if you dont look tough or experienced people will push you around. bottom line if you were the kid who got bullied in school then maybe you can expect this to happen to you more. personally if its not worth it i dont do things to escalate the situation(if im in the wrong). look away if hes mugging you, participate in this thing they call a "line" up(if there persistent with the attitude, then confront it). if your not willing to fight then your feeling will most likely get hurt. sometimes its better than your face hurting. never been in a water/surf fight always wanted to though cause im all about testing myself. could explain why i paddle into double overhead with only 6 months of surfing experience.

do what feels right and you will go home happier

Wow, crabn415 with one of the best bottom line assessments of the situation (IMO) gets a -4.

It's a world full of assholes and sometimes one of them will focus on you and fuck with you in some way. If you like to or are not afraid to fight then get back in their face and let the shit fly or not. If you don't care for that sort of thing then it's usually an uncomfortable experience with your ego suffering the most. Best defense is to be fully centered deep within yourself, digest aggression the best you can and try to turn off the resentment loops we get going after these kinds of experiences.

This is a stupid thread. Bully's are gonna bully, if you don't want to stand up to them you gotta take it. You can't change them, just control your response. I myself enjoy revenge, maybe wax kook on his windshield? You can also ignore it, or give the perma smile and be unphased. Making them realize they have no power over you would probably be the most annoying for an aggro d-bag.

As has been pointed out, the Santa Cruz attitude kind of sets the bar for turdism. We don't live there, so we don't know how overrun it gets. That doesn't excuse the "I'm a dick and I'm going to bring everybody around me down". The more waves you catch the worse it gets.

I don't have a problem with reporting the 'incident' with description. What kind of board was the guy riding? If that guy shows up at OB sporting the same attitude, there might have to be an attitude readjustment.

sharkturd

@crabn415, "I paddle into double overhead after only six months surfing experience"...But do you actually catch a wave and ride it? If so, and I extrapolate your exceptionally accelerated learning curve, I reckon by summer's end you"ll be ready for pipe...or Jaws. No?
