I hope this isn't true. I know he missed his first and second round heats in PR, but this just seems impossible and so sad! Here's hoping that the unconfirmed reports are unfounded. I'd love to hear AI say that reports of his death are greatly exaggerated.

RIP A.I. I was rooting for you at the Billabong Pro Teahupoo and I was happy to see you win. I'm glad you got one last win before you left us.

It will be very difficult for surfers and organizers to continue the contest at Puerto Rico in light of this shocking news.

Wow. He seemed stoked on life in a recent interview after winning an ASP event.

Treatment
There is no specific treatment for dengue fever. You will need fluids if there are signs of dehydration. Acetaminophen (Tylenol) is used to treat a high fever. Avoid taking aspirin.
Prognosis
The condition generally lasts a week or more. Although uncomfortable, dengue fever is not deadly. People with the condition should fully recover.

I'm sure he was trying to speed home just in case his wife gave birth early...Such a shame he'll never get to see him/her.

Its really sad, you can always second guess, but knowing how I would react if I had a rash and was feeling like crap. I would just want to crawl up somewhere and be left alone.

The last report I saw was that he checked into a hotel room in Dallas being too sick to fly home.

Very Very sad after one of the more spectacular swells to learn of this awesome surfers passing.

@lkilpatrick: ditto. I've been really sick before and not gone to the hospital. In hindsight: not good judgement, but when you're young . . .

Irons was used to being Superman, conquering some of nature's most powerful and impressive features. I'll bet most guys like him wouldn't go to the hospital. It's only a fever and a rash right? No problemo.

Poor guy.

And already there is this premature report from Hawaii:

I absolutely hate when a news resource reports something like this without first having all the facts! With so many thoughtful and caring words about Andy pouring in from all over the worlds surfing community, this paper decides to make assumptions and prints it on the first day!!!!!

We lost a great man and surfer. R.I.P. Andy :(

Very sad indeed....also very strange as most healthy 32 year old athletic males who contract Dengue fever do not die....I'm sure there's more to the story...RIP
