Another Dolphin at OB

Rant - Another Dolphin at OB

Saw a shark alert when checking conditions on Surfline this am, thought I'd pass it along. What's going on lately? Are all of these really shark sightings? Or was there a sea-lion bubble and now the sharks are hongry?

Sighted a shark at OB last night at sunset. I was surfing S/l/o/a/t. Fin was about 18" out of water and was about 20 yards past where the waves were breaking."

I guess ideally what I would like to hear is not speculation from the surf community but information from a real shark researcher, preferably the Jeff Goldbloom in Jurassic Park-type, to let us know if there has been an unusual boom in shark population or substantial loss in their preys' population that would lead to all these sightings. Because I looked at shark shields and they are like 700 bucks.

I'm sure we can hire Jeff Goldbloom to tell us that.

I've heard bits and pieces of speculation from beachside folks about a long upwelling leading to more food leading to more sharks of all kinds: basking sharks, salmon sharks, makos, GWS, and (lol dolphins). The sfexaminer puff piece says this is the season for them and doesn't go into it any further.

Anyone want to volunteer to become a part time marine biologist and write a formal scientific paper for some sea journal? We'll totally help you write your grant application. :D

I just got a report from a buddy he saw a 10ft one in the surf at a beach in HMB at 10:30am today. There seems to be an over abundance of whitey around this year.

There has been an increase in shark sightings.
The SRC's report section makes for pleasantly grim reading.

I've got mice in my kitchen, now a shark infestation in the backyard?? Wo' what to do??

@fleetmo: you got it backwards. The sharks have a human infestation in their backyard.

Maybe shark week is making everyone look just a little harder.
They've always been there. Especially when seal pups are around and we have strong upwelling.
But now we are all bug-eyed experts staring into the ocean looking for rows of razor sharp fangs.
