Another drowning in Pacifica...

Horrible news. When will people learn that this isn't Hilton Head type water around here?

I was at SMLM this afternoon, must have been before this happened. It was a super mellow day so the lineup with full of rental boards and first timers. I was out past the break around ###### when a few of us noticed an exhausted newbie 50 yards further out, barely on his board and only paddling with one hand. Looked like the guy overestimated his endurance and started getting sucked out. One of the other surfers kindly paddled over and towed him back towards the shore. Rental dude had zero energy left and didn't look like he had any buddies either. I guess he's lucky he made it back to shore today.

Be careful people.

Unnecessary to say the least. People need to heed the power of the Ocean all the time, and not risk your life unless you know what you're doing. As a surfer and swimmer most of my life, I still am very respectful of the Ocean. I go to the Beach often, and too often I see people playing way to close to the surf line when they shouldn't be.

In every news report I saw, and heard since these two drownings, not once did anybody mention that individuals need to be aware of the power of the Ocean, and to be cautious themselves. But ever person interviewed was calling for more signage on the Beach. It's not signs that saves lives, but common sense.

I think signs help. Every time I paddle out at OB I walk past the "People have drowned here..." sign and noted it. Probably, so have you. It's impressive. That's why surfers never drown. We're tuned.

It's only tourists and kids that drown. Signs generally help, I think, not that I know much on the matter. Pacifica could use some. So could Rockaway for when it's huge.

I'm not for a nanny state. Just folks don't know, and it's a hard way to learn.
