Has anyone tried one? What are the advantages? The fin set up is super interesting!
Asymmetrical Boards?

I've been a bit interested in these but never had the chance to ride one. Big name board makers don't make them probably due to the fact they would have to predict the number of goofyfoots who might buy them. So you're options are find a boutique shaper (like Hydronamica, Mandala, etc) but that is probably going to cost $800+, for a risky board??? Or you could try to shape it yourself! There are loads of experiments of this type on swaylocks.

dsx2000 pretty much nailed it with that comment. Anyone who rides anything else is a joke and just wasted their time and money, amen brother.

cant wait to see one of these at the beach.... "No, they aren’t made specifically to go left, but all the things that are beneficial in the design of these particular shapes came from surfing a lot of lefts; so the way I figured these out in my head is based around surfing frontside a bunch. But these should go right, though sometimes they don’t [laughs]."

This is some good footage of Richard Kenvin on a asymm board, some very impressive cutbacks.

Also I remembered that Karl Ekstrom has some type of patent on asymmetric boards. Not sure what this means in practical terms. Do shapers have to send him money if they make such a board?
@dsk2000 you nailed that answer! What was the question? It doesn't seem that c.elliot was asking what the preferred board for DOH OB was.... Don't get me wrong if you're surfing those conditions well and have your equipment dialed in I give you props for that.
Part of me has to wonder if there is something behind these boards since there is a considerable leverage difference between a heel side turn and a toe turn.

I think they need to take it to the next level by incorporating the hydrodynamics of a minke whale flipper and put some bumps and valleys on the decks: http://jeb.biologists.org/content/211/12/1859.full.pdf
I just used the google & found out it's already been done....

People aren't shaped the same in front as they are in back. Our body mechanics are different frontside vs backside. Snowboard design has already gone asymmetric for real. In theory it's a no-brainer. In practice, however, I'm not quite ready to throw down the $$ on the experiment. I might not even be a good enough surfer to need or know the difference. Interesting to see where it leads.
