Awesome dudes to counteract the aggro

Rant - Awesome dudes to counteract the aggro

I didn't think to share this at first, but I keep reading stuff on here about people being dicks in the water and I felt like I needed to put out a positive story to help counteract all the negative news. I was out at Pacifica/Linda mar yesterday afternoon, enjoying the sun and the water and the semi-decent (albeit smaller) waves and had two really friendly guys chat it up in the lineup with me for a while. This is a big deal for me 'cos I just moved here about 2 months ago and it hasn't happened very often while I've been out. I didn't catch their names, although one was body surfing and not on a board, but it made me extra stoked when I got out at the end of my 2 hour session to have been treated so kindly as the new guy in the water, and to have them share what they knew about surfing around here with me and just have a fun conversation in general while we were sitting waiting for the waves.

I hope stories like these are the norm, but if we're going to use this site to call out the jerks, I think we should use to to call out the awesome people too.

It's called stoke report, not jerk alert, :-)

Yeah, Jerk Alert is something altogether entirely different. Let me assure you.

The truth is that the good people far outnumber the angry shit-disturbers. There will always be unhappy aggressive people in the world. You can run into them anywhere while doing anything. Surfing has nothing to do with it, it's just extra ugly to see while out enjoying the waves and the water. What really matters is how we react to the reality of the occasional outburst of ugliness. Do we run with it or put our attention back on the beauty that surfing is all about. That's what I like so much about this website, the overwhelming majority of the occasional trollish or hateful type comments are either ignored or gently rebuffed and never given the chance to gain any real traction, while there is enough ireverence to keep things from becoming bland. I love it.

I hope we can all do the same thing out in the water. Sometimes people are going to not be nice. It's never an enjoyable experience but we deal the best we can and then continue with what we paddled out to do in the first place. I have been surfing here at Ocean Beach since 1983 and I can say that except for a few incidents this is one of the mellowest places that I have ever surfed, and, I think this website is a clear reflection of that spirit.

spread good vibes, like it. that said some folks want to yuk it up in the lineup and its like "hey man right on with all the kindness but im trying to surf here. i'm glad the wilco concert was bitchin' and that ur daughter's soccer team rules but im kinda losing my focus here and ... outside!!!" i had a guy try and sell me time shares in the water before. i hope my comment isnt kanye westing. im glad u were stoked out by friendly dudes. my experience is that 90+% of the people in the line up are chill.

I'm keeping an eye out for the timeshare guy in the lineup... although if he was offering a free new board and trip to some tropical beach for only listening to a brief 20 minute presentation on how a timeshare could change my life... :p

@69......Good story bro. I grew up in the bay, and been surfing Ocean Beach for 20 years. And i welcome you, because there will be plenty more good experiences like that for you to come. The bottom line is, all we can do is be good people, and people will notice that. Good people are everywhere, assholes definitely exist, but the good folks far out weigh them. When in new in a "pack", rule of thumb, sit on the shoulder, compliment good rides, and say hi to everybody. Even the grumps will eventually give a mumble.
Cheers bro, enjoy. Our part of the coast is one of the last magical places you can actually find soul surf.

Thanks to the guy who took and or posted that awesome shot of the "Go Giants" mural. I kept telling myself I was gonna go take a picture of it when there were some solid waves in the backround but I never did, good thing y'all aren't as lazy as me. Even if there are a few aggro cheeseballs just remember that Tim Lincecum may have just gotten back on track today and the Giants just swept the $%*!ing dodgers.

Wow, I'm very impressed with all of your comments, on this particular blog. :) Unfocused; thank you for what you explain about "all we can do is be good people". I like that alot. No matter how much you are trying to be a good person. Don't let the bully's in the water or not in the water. Get to you. They are just sad sad broken people who don't know how to deal with it, that is all. Mahalo everyone.

I think we tend to forget how lucky we are to be able to surf. Also, I can walk out of my front door and get into a fight. I don't need that sort of negativity in the water. I hate myself when I become that guy out there or if I let someone else bother me. I have learned to leave and go elsewhere.

@ congested - i agree. it's easy to forget how lucky we are to surf. some people can't walk, some can't swim, and some will just never, ever know what they're missing by not "going for it".
great perspective bra
cheers
