Bad surf conditions make for great surfers

Maybe this article will make you feel better about surfing Ocean Beach on crappy days.

"It's harder to ride lousy surf. Kelly [Slater] comes from Florida and in his area there are all beach breaks that tend to be blown out more than they are glassy. If you love to surf enough you will go out in anything."

"go out every single afternoon when it's blown out and everybody else is saying it's too lousy to surf. If you do you are gonna get good and get good fast." that's good advice.

i think he could add the point that when you are accustomed to surfing poor/slopfest conditions (ie OB most of the time), your surfing is that much better when it's good because you're that much hungrier for good waves when they (finally!) do arrive.

yea, i totally agree. and trying to catch the screwed up, junky, unnaturally-fast, freezing franken-waves at Ocean Beach is so hard, that when you finally go on vacation, the perfectly peeling clear blue 10' hawaiian masterpieces feel easy, and you don't look like a complete jack-ass in the lineup :)

...or you're so surprised at how great it is in the tropics that you keep falling off from the shock. That's my excuse anyway. :-)
