Best Surfboard of 2011 - Voted By Surfers

8

SurfScience.com is proud to announce our newest resource for surfers, "The Best Surfboards of 2011"

This interactive chart pulls data from 1,500 surfboards and over 5,000 user reviews to let you research your next surfboard model. This is the first time a resource like this has been available to surfers and we're stoked to be launching it ahead of schedule.

Do you like fantasy football data? Excel spreadsheets? Numbers? The interactive chart gives you all of the data so you can sort, filter and search for the best surfboard. You can organize boards by category, popularity or performance attributes.

Thanks to this new feature, you now have the power to do more research on surfboards than ever before. The coolest part is that it will keep getting better. Every month we add new surfboards to the directory, allowing us to pull data from an even bigger field. And the more surfers that review their surfboards, the better the results will get!

So go ahead, mess around with it a bit. Email it to your friends, share it on facebook or tweet about it. The more people use it, the better it gets.

Really cool concept - and an amazing number of rankings so far. I was disappointed to see that my shortboard (Firewire Dominator) topped the shortboard rankings. That's one less excuse I can use...

Hmmm.... 7 of the top 11 boards are Channel Islands. Sure CI makes some good boards but 7 out of 11 top boars are theirs. Yeah right!!!!
Makes you wonder who's sponsoring this competition.... doesn't it. Some of the best fish designs are out of San Diego and none are listed (Pavel, Lis, Hanel, Mandala, Zamora, Frye...) I smell Marketing.

@joby1 I think it's just mass produced boards. Those guys do a lot of custom shapes.

The number one, the pod, looks like a pretty sweet summer board. I'll have to remember that in a few months.

The "Best" surfboard is the one shaped for you by your local shaper.

Your fence is pure class. I'm not worthy if you have a tiki bar out there as well.

Hey guys, thanks for the feedback. First off, no money is involved. We haven't accepted money from any surfboard shaper to make sure our site stays neutral.

CI has a lot of boards in the top 100 because they are an extremely popular company. Our ratings take into account number of views & rankings. Basically, a board rated 10 by one person isn't worth as much as a board rated 9 by 10 people in our book. The more ratings their are, the stronger weight of the performance scores in the rankings.

Our directory is big, like 1,500 boards big, but there are thousands more. We emailed a few hundred shapers and asked them to send us info on their models. The ones that got back first got put up first and we're going through the rest now. If you know of a shaper that isn't listed, feel free to let us know, eventually we hope to have every surfboard listed.

Proctor makes great surfboards. He hasn't been added to our directory yet though, so none of his boards qualified. Maybe next year.

Shawn - I agree, a custom board is best for you. But what our guide does is show the shapes that seem to be working for a lot of people. Being in our top 100 says that a lot of people have tried this shape with great success. Maybe you see something you like and have your shaper make something similar but customized for your breaks, skill, etc. We're working on ways to feature small local shapers more on SurfScience.com.
