The best surfboard bike racks in the world

1868

Do you live near your favorite surf spots, but it is too far to walk to the waves? Are you saving your monthly budget from expensive car travels? Fortunately, surfboard bike racks were invented, so that you can easily move from your house to the beach without wasting money and polluting the atmosphere.

Sometimes, good waves are within a long walking distance. A bicycle is fast and will warm up your legs before hitting the line-up. There are three ways of transporting surfboards on a bike: side mounted, rear mounted and upright mounted.

The most popular way of driving a bicycle with your surfboard is with a side mounted rack. Although your bike gets wider, you have no security problems and wind won't halt you from speeding up.

i use the carver side rack. have seen a few others around SF using it too. it's rad. going up hills (at least mellow ones like j*dah) isn't even that bad - the board kind of adds a psuedo-momentum. just make sure your bike seat is tightened!

When you turn your bike does the board hit your front wheel, when its mounted like the pic fullybrah uploaded?

i really do like the side racks better lik i uploaded but yes if you have a longboard you can hit your front tire if you turn too sharly. that is seldom. more of a problem is your left legand pedal can hit the board.

I just use an Xtracycle with Longloader + Wideloader. It will happily accommodate a longboard, and the big-ass pockets on the Free Radical provide plenty of room for clothes, gear, tools, etc.

I have the Carver surf rack moto, and carver surf rack bicycle, longboard version. Xtracycle is over doing it IMO. It's spendy, compared to the bolt-on solutions. However, if you MUST have carbon fiber and kung-fu grips, then yes, get it :)

Did you guys not see the babe on the bike

I did, but then was like...uh ok, so is this posed? Is she really going to surf? Where's her wetsuit? OK, there's a bikini underneath there, but I didn't see a lock for her bike, nor a back pack, to hold her clothes. Conclusion: Totally contrived situation only to show off her ASS, to make dudes want to get that POS bike rack. I feel lied to, taken advantage of, and I refused to be treated as a dog, and have sex be the major selling point in a surfing product that isn't even being used here. Does that explain why I didn't comment on the babe on the bike?

Thorton? No thanks, fellahs. Too many horseturds to negotiate to surf waters that are too sharkturdy, even for me.

@Piss: Xtracycle _is_ overdoing it for just a surf-bike. But the whole point is you can haul all sorts of cargo. I think of my bike as a human-powered pickup truck. It will happily accommodate one (or more) surfboards, laundry, furniture, you name it. It mostly gets used for surfing these days but it's seen plenty of action in all those other departments, too.

What about tandem bike surf racks? I mean with the hills in San francisco, if your girlfriend is in front, you may get to the beach a lot sooner. But then you (the guy in back) would have to carry all the wetsuits.

The main problem with surfboard racks for bicycles is that they usually don't detached easily, or they're designed like a trailer and add an extra 8 feet to the back of your bike. As someone who uses a bike to commute on a daily basis, I can't have a rack permanently attached to my bike. I found this cool design for a rack made out of PVC that some guy posted online, and then modified it so that the only part of the rack that ever fully attached to your bike were two T sections that the arms of the rack connect into. Here's a pic of the rack (under construction) but you get the gist. Final version has bungee cords, foam covers, and I attach the arms to the Ts with rope. My ride to OB is 4 miles, and it works great. None of my boards are over 6'4' but I think it'd work fine with something up to 8 or so. Depends on weight, really.
