Although locked securely to a steel window grate with a horseshoe lock, my bike was stolen this weekend. Since these things tend to happen in waves, I thought I'd warn everybody to be extra vigilant.
Also, if you see anyone trying to sell a 56cm trek 1500 road bike like the one pictured, but with white handlebar tape, please let me know :-). It would also have a decal on the downtube from Bike Doctor of Arnold, MD.
The old business card in the seat tube just above the BB has (eventually) recovered many a bike. Thieves don't look there, but bike shops do. Unfortunately, that can be many months later. In the city's high-theft, police don't need if it don't bleed culture, the best way to minimize thefts seems to be keep things out of sight.
That sucks. I locked myself out of my house. Anyone else have any mishaps this weekend unrelated to surfing ;)

There is nothing that gets me more irate and possibly prone to violence than bike theft. WTF. It is a bike. This may be the only way this person gets around. Hope you get it back...
During the contest, a photo was posted of a bike thief in action at the Beach. Might've been fatnewt who posted it. Can't remember. But, maybe it was that scumbag. (the thief, not fatnewt)

It's in bad shape rusty chain very squeaky so I am listening out ..

ahh, bad vibes. had a bike stolen once and then returned, weirdly, at the mission police station. it then was stolen again some weeks later. when you gotta go. also had an expensive carbon one stolen out of my garage. which I left open overnight. had to explain to the police who came so I could get insurance: "yes, officer, I am such a yuppie dickhead that I left a bike that cost almost as much as a small car unlocked in the garage with the door open and the lights on. sorry you have to deal with us appalling people, but there it is. we all have our karma".

report it of course, because if they see someone on it, they might check it (cops doing a check) and if there's a good description, you'll get it back. haven't seen the guy from the contest around since, which is odd, because he told me the Beach belonged to him.
Yeah the feeling of going outside and your bike not being there sucks! I had 3 nice bikes stolen in a row. Then i learned, out of sight out of mind.
On a funnier note: One of my buddies who is really into dirt Jumping had a nice little prank pulled on him. His bike was spotted outside of Walgreens, Apparently he had locked his 1,000 DJ-bike outside for a quick minute. When he came out his wheels were gone and his frame was flipped upside down. Should have seen the look on his face. Of course after a good laugh we had to jump out from behind a wall with both wheels in hand.He should have never parked that bike outside. We thought he should consider that lesson a freebie, on us:)
Good news! It turns out my landlord (not the sharpest) cut the lock and was going to give the bike away, as she thought it belonged to an old tenant who moved out months ago. She saw my note reporting a bike theft, and called to apologize and tell me that she, in fact, had stolen my bike.
I couldn't believe my ears when she told me this. She didn't put up a note or send an email or anything, just cut the lock and took the bike. I'm glad I noticed it right away, or it may have been sold/donated.
