The BP Oil Spill Over-layed on SF Bay Area

This is more than a little depressing, but helpful to get a grasp on the scope of the disaster. A Google Maps engineer has set up a webpage that helps give a sense of the size of the BP spill by overlaying on some of the world's major cities.

Not exactly analogous, but this made me think of a map I recently saw. It's a view of the San Francisco area bays, baylands, and adjacent habitats as they appeared about 200 years ago, when Europeans first arrived in the region.

Edit: here's a link to find maps of current bayland habitat: http://www.sfei.org/ecoatlas/Habitat/index.html.

The oil companies seriously have their head up their ass. No contingency plan for this eventuality.

This is the sort of thing that happens when there is too little regulation. Thanks Dick Cheney (and the rest of your ilk).

Oil executives shift blame at Senate hearing

Three big oil and oil service companies all pointed fingers at one another for blame in the Gulf of Mexico oil spill in testimony Tuesday at the Senate Energy and Natural Resources Committee.

While saying that it was too early to make a final determination of the cause of the April 20 blowout that started the spill, the companies stressed one another's failures.

And wouldn't you know that "Halliburton" had a hand in this mess! How proud DICK(!) Cheney must feel.
