Buying Your Way to the Beach

Many people are surprised to find out that in some places you have to pay to walk onto a beach. They are further shocked to find out that in some places you can’t even get to the beach (regardless of fee).

Focusing the discussion on the United States… that spectrum looks something like this:

There are free beaches in maine! Though much of the coastline is rocky. But there ARE beaches.

Yeah, CA has pretty awesome beach access policies. NJ has shitty ones. The town I lived in required beach badges all summer long. Even residents had to pay, I believe it was around $65 for a season badge. Not only was it a slap in the face to have to pay to use the beach, but it always sucked when I ran down there stoked to surf, and had to run all the way home because I forgot my "beach badge".
