Rant - Candy Corn Set

Geek flash: New camera. Less glass maybe better brains. I was using a c.2005 Kodak Z740 (~$230). http://a.img-dpreview.com/news/0501/kodak_z740backfront.jpg
Had a fairly big lens for a non SLR. Seemed to take good enuf 5x7 pics.

New camera which I used to take tonight's shot is an ultra compact travel camera - a Panasonic Lumix DMC-ZR1 (~$240)

What I don't have but maybe should consider is a REAL camera like a Canon EOS Rebel T1i as I was told by a photographer friend that mo' glass = better. But at 9 bonz + lens = a grand+ I'm just wondering what would be the value. I'm a huge fan of 'good enuf' but would be curious to do a side by side sunset comparison if anyone has such a beast and is down for a challenge.

Check B+H Photo. They have refurbished dSLRs and lenses. I got a very nice deal on my Canon 20D the year the 30D came out.

I get out of work early some days if you want to try out my dSLR. :)
It paid for itself several times over back when I was a wedding/event photographer.

Get a 20D/30D/40D and some good glass.. for sunset shots maybe the Canon 18-55 IS, Tamron 17-50 or Canon 10-22.. and a tripod

The T1i is being discontinued. T2i will replace it. Go on craigslist and look there for a camera. Sometimes you can find a good deal.

Does your Panasonic have a "minimum exposure time" feature? (It's available on my ZS3.) If so, turn it up to 1 second and use a tripod, see what you get!
