The Cardiff Kook makes the WSJ

1548

The botanical society in this beachfront town thought it was honoring surfers when it spent $120,000 to erect a 16-foot tall statue of one riding a wave. Instead, it inspired a wave of humiliation for the hapless bronze dude.

Locals nicknamed it the "Cardiff Kook," derisive surfer slang for a wannabe surfer.

Critics also took to the Internet, creating a MySpace page for the adolescent-looking Kook, which reads in part: "I've never surfed in my life, but I would love to." But the main blowback has been an ongoing campaign that has seen the Kook dressed like a clown, a ballerina and topped with a pumpkin head. The most notorious act happened in July, when a local sculptor encapsulated the entire statue so it looked as though it was being devoured by a great white shark.

The statue really does look like the guy is getting ready to launch into a ballet-inspired spin. I do feel sorry for the artist. He executed to brief: "Show the awkward joy of learning to surf." Too bad the brief sucked.

Here are some of the changes made to the kook:

The Cardiff Kook's form kinda reminds me of Cryptomail. Where's that dude been anyways?

Even though the surfer's form is totally f*cked up, it ends up being good art because of all the controversy it's raised. Bad art is art which is ignored because it doesn't create emotional response.

I kinda feel bad for the sculpture's creator, but he got what he deserved. If he didn't want the surf community to get upset he should've portrayed a Kelly Slater (or Brad Gerlach since he's local) cutback instead of a Kook standing on the wrong place on his board, with his balance all off, looking like he's gonna fall.

As an aside, kudos to the surf community for merely "decorating" it instead of vandalizing it.

kookster looks like he's trying to walk like an Egyptian on his board. The artist could fix it by putting the hands in ANY position but the spread fingers thumbs down that is depicted...change the board position to near vertical and call it 'air drop'.

At least it gets people involved. A lot of sculptures are passed by unnoticed.
