Catching up with four legendary women of surfing

1889

In the 1950s, four women realized they shared a common dream. More than anything, they wanted to surf the then barely ridden waves of the Pacific. A half century later, these pioneers of the ocean -- Betty Van Dyke, Earlyne Colfer, Rosemari Rice, and Sheila Ralston -- gathered for lunch downtown. Some hadn't seen the others for five, 10, 20 years or more, but they gathered to relive and rehash memories from the days when waves were less crowded, boards weighed more, and the wetsuit was far from common.
