Caught in the oil

The utter and horrifyingly complete opposite of stoke.

I was about to post these as well. Totally heartbreaking.

I would gladly chop BP CEO Tony Hayward's head off with a sword.

No words for how disturbing and sad this is.

This is the terrible risk we constantly face with offshore drilling. It's not worth it.

Unfortunately, that's just the death on the surface. There's millions more organisms that are getting wiped out in the deep.

Makes me nauseous every time I hear about it on the radio, tv, ...

I would recommend taking a look at the 60 Minutes piece from a couple weeks ago:

It's best take on it that I've seen yet.

as much as i loathe bp and all the other oil companies, i can't help but remember that if, like me, you use any plastic, gas, or other fossil fuel derivative, then you're a big part of the problem. bp is filling the demand of an oil addicted world. i agree that we need to make these guys pay for their horrific mistake, but we need to change our own behavior if we are ever going to see this end.

I agree with you 100% H20. Individual efforts are a big part of the solution but I think moreover we will need large-scale government led help (better public transportation, higher fuel efficiency standards, alternative energy incentives, etc...) to make the big changes. And of course, individual efforts are needed to get the government (by voting and activism) and industries (by choosing where we spend our money) to change their ways. Stepping off my soapbox now...

If you have a stomach for more: http://www.boston.com/bigpicture/2010/05/oil_reaches_louisiana_shores.ht...

When Obama said he accepts responsibility for the Gulf oil spill, he's not just being rhetorical: http://www.globalresearch.ca/index.php?context=va&aid=19027
I had heard this story then discounted it. It surfaced several more times (including 60 Minutes) and finally when the Washington Post ran it, I had to acquiesce to the possibility that it is bus(h)iness-as-usual at MMS. Sure BushCo relaxed the rules but the 'New' Guard has been suckling the same halcyon-laced petroleum teat until only a few weeks ago.

I spent 25 years on the Gulf Coast and still have family and many friends there including Coasties and scientists. Paralysis pretty much sums up the mood right now.

As much as I loath Palin, she made a good point yesterday: http://thehill.com/blogs/twitter-room/other-news/101007-palin-targets-ex...
Despite her bad grammar and time-line fallacy, she is more than intimating that stopping a land leak is waaaaaaaaaaay easier than one at 150 atmospheres. That is a REALLY compelling and timely point.

Not supporting more drilling, anywhere. (a luxury of driving less than a thousand miles last year and one that few Americans share) but come the Great Energy Debate and whether we should pay the Arabs, go off-shore or violate ANWR, Palin will score HUGE points when she twitpix this: http://wonneg.com/UploadFile/ProductFile/20071122103211620_Pic.jpg

Palin's comments are spurious. She is part of the "drill baby drill coalition" and would opt for drilling ANWR as well as offshore! And drilling everywhere we can (even if we shouldn't) on US territory only provides a fraction of what we consume.

I hope that the Feds decide to increase the taxes on oil companies and prevent them form passing it on to consumers. BP made $25 billion in profit last year. That is more than they are expected to pay in reparations for the spill. So they are going to loose probably 6 months profit over this! If we tqx BP and other companies appropriately we could handsomely fund oceanic and alternative fuel research.
That way we could be prepared to assess and act independently of them next time they fuck up! And they will!! The Coast Guard's own deep water submersibles (which they don't have now) could assess and repair damages and then send the oil companies and their contractors the bill.
