Rant - Classified link: Yes or no?

Having had little luck with CL lately, and dealing with all the "DICKS" who never follow through, and or show up to purchase items, I was wondering if you, "Stokereport," were still considering adding a link to sell items here. I feel that we have, for the most part, a very mature and honest following on this site, and some of us could benefit from others on what they may have to offer for sale here.

Up in Nor Cal, north of SF, we don't have surf stuff swap/sale events, and I really haven't noticed many in the City either. There's a plethora of surfing items out there just sitting idol of which would be appreciated and desired by others in the market for at lower prices than you would pay for them new in shops. I for one have several items I would like to pass on for very reasonable prices.

So let's see what you all think, and then "Stokereport," of course, has the final decision.

BTW, still thinking of a gathering of the Stokereport crew sometime late summer for a day of surf and grub and sharing at a place to be determined.

Caution; steer clear of a guy in Petaluma named Dominic who claims to be a surfer and wants to purchase items on CL but in reality is a troller.

Wave glider: +1 on getting together.

As for the classifieds, I think it's a good idea, it's just a matter of the time to code it up. Like most of us, I seem to be constantly swamped by work and life.

What does everyone think? Classifieds?

Yeah, it sucks dealing with the craigslist deadbeats. It may be easiest to just add another category; reports, rants, ads.

You can make a post, add a picture, people comment, voila - classified section.

As far as surf swaps, there are actually plenty around here. The log shop had one recently, and gracean posted this as well.

I am pro classifieds but think it will create way more work for SR in terms of keeping the b.s. off the site.

We should be careful and thoughtful about what kind of energy we summon in to this forum - ie. how it could change our community.

I agree entirely that "...we have, for the most part, a very mature and honest following on this site..." as @WaveGlider said, but I wonder if that would erode if folks were to catch wind that, "hey, there's this other site called stokereport.com where you can also unload that stick, dude..."

In other words, we might suck the very same "...craigslist deadbeats... [that] it sucks dealing with..." right into our pure and uncommercial air space. That would not be good. Quality of posts could decline, as the site swells up with frustrated surfboard hawkers/buyers - the "ad" part of the site would inevitably bleed into the main site.

Craigslist certainly has its drawbacks, but it also has robust capabilities, ie. issuing temporary/confidential email address for sellers, and other protections, so that insane and/or obsessive surfboard buyers can't come after you, contact you on your personal email, or attack your profile, et cetera.

People get pretty weird and crazy around this kind of stuff. Can you imagine, posts from guys who feel they got stiffed or whatnot, on this site? Worse yet, we could turn into a magnet for beginners/kooks, a la the terrifying "how to get started surfing in NorCal video" from last week. Yikes.

So as nice as it could be to have classified ads here, I'd say we should be very wary of inviting a commercial energy to this space... it could have some significant drawbacks... like "Dominic from Petaluma", for instance.

Quit talking about me, I'm Dom from Petaluma.
Also, CL has been working great for me?! I've gotten all my boards from there with no issues.

@piss_shiver; are you the genuine Dom from Petaluma or an imposter? I'll know if you tell me who you work for "up here."

@David; you have pointed out some very valid concerns. I too would be worried about the same things, and from there this site could turn into a trash talking bunch of snivelers. Having said that, I felt compelled to point out my recent encounter while trying to sell an item on CL to a Dominic from Petaluma, because he didn't keep his promise with me.

And having said that, I still have the New O'Neill Psycho 1 XL wetsuit for sale @ $200.

*HOOOONNNNNK* :)
Keep trying on CL. Offer to go where people are, if you're in the area of them anyway, esp if you smell genuine non Dom from Petaluma interest. At least that's what I'd want if I were a buyer :)

Make it so only posters above a certain stoke score can post ads?

I think the certain stoke score would be a great way to do it, because if someone has invested into the community then it is the fastest way to show it. Setting the number to be something like 20-50 would be about right.
