Looks like a surfer was picked up ok off the Cliffhouse . Hope everybody's fine.
Goes without saying, but watch the currents today, although they're probably switching soon.
Is this why they say don't surf at the mouth of the bay on an outgoing tide? Danggg that dude is way out there.
Or he's just waiting for the cleanup set of his life.
To the Coast Guard, upon being rescued: "I thought Potato Patch was around here somewhere..."
all joking aside; its super awesome he was rescued. Most likely, he's not just "that dude", probably a fellow stoke reporter. Props to Fire department and Coast Guard.
This is what I always fear happening to me at that spot with the funny orangey bridge...except without the boat pickup.
Probably a stoke reporter huh? Well, for mine own part, I almost got christened at the bridge (yeah it's when you get sucked out and around and there's jack sh1t you can do about it) but paddled into the rocks in survival mode, and yes, I've been there at the N end like that guy, where I've gotten very dangerously close to the book end.
The key is knowing when that can happen, and just not farkin doing it :)
Go mid, go big and just suck it up.
bombsquad, the cutter has a bumper sticker: 'Ass grass gas, nobody rides for free.'
"what's the fee for pickup?" Egads, you know it will be substantial!! I would guess at least a couple grand. Hope his waves were worth it. Comparatively, he's probably one dude that will consider the LM parking fee a bargain.
@Sticker... grim, cause he sure as sh#t wouldn't have had grass or gas on him!
@bombsquad i know if theres a helicopter involved its 10 grand. its between 1 to 10 grand though is coast guard is involved
My wife and I were getting ready to head into Wise, and saw this person out there. They seemed to be staying in position, and having no issues, so we went in. When we came out the rescue was full on. Did they need to be rescued?
This brings up another good question. Should you ever call in the troops for a fellow surfer from the beach?
i've been picked up by a CG heli and the fee was $0.
could have been due to me being engaged in rescuing someone else at the time. or maybe not. dunno. i sent them a case of beer and never got a bill for the heli.
They don't charge you when they pick you up. Had it happen to someone I know (and I swear, that's not a euphemism for "it happened to me"). Guess they figure your embarrassment for being the kook they had to rescue is penalty enough.
Don't think so. Not even sure they took my buddy's name, not to mention any of his other identifying details. They plucked his ass out of the water outside of China Beach & dropped him unceremoniously outside the lineup @ Ke11y's.
btw, @dakota, didn't mean to imply your kookiness in getting picked up... Sounds like you had extenuating circumstances. :)
no. this guy is not a stoke report person. I definitely called the report "poor" yesterday. why would they possibly endanger life and limb for wild, surly, unpredictable waves after such succinct assessment? I do know that if they come out in the boat and pick you up it is no charge but that when they take you to shore and it seems like the freakin ambulance needs to take you in for observation it will be a few grand for the taxi ride. glad they picked the bloke up and that he is safe and kissing the very earth that he now stands upon. hope they checked his passport though. he could be a threat to national security or something... maybe he floated down from like canada or something....
damn kannuckistanians holding out on grass and gas...dunno about the the other thing tho....
The CG station in Sausalito has a map showing the rescue of windsurfers, kiters and surfers in and around the Gate. Pretty interesting how the map pins are clustered.
I was leaving the kid's museum in Sausalito with the kids yesterday and saw this guy walking off the CG boat with his 7' + board. He looked ok, but I was wondering where they picked this guy up from... mystery solved.
Haha welcome to sausilito!!! Get some ice cream before that walk of shame!!!!
