Dale "Daily" Webster crosses 12,784 days of consecutive surfing

1393

From TSJ: "The man just won't stop, and as such, we're guessing congratulations are in order for Sonoma County stalwart Dale "Daily" Webster, who recently celebrated 12,784 consecutive days of riding three or more waves to the beach. Inspired by the great "Monster from New Zealand" swell of 1975, he hasn't missed a day since the historic southern hemi hit West Coast shores. For those of you who are not so mathematically inclined, Daily's streak translates into dodging white sharks for the past 35 years...or 1,821 weeks. At this rate the Mayan calendar's going to run out before he does. Regardless, through idyllic days at his beloved Doran Park to nightmare sessions in the worst conditions winter can whip up, Daily's been doing it on the daily, and for that we have to applaud him. Here's to another 12,784 days!"

@Sticker, you have a long way to go....

By my estimate, that's 10,368.75 days like today. Wow. Yeah, I don't think I'm going to make it.

I guess Dale hasnt been to the Grand Canyon, San Juan Islands, Paris, Vermont, Berlin, Yosemite, Death Valley , etc etc etc in the last 35 years. What a depressingly narrow life.

Gotta agree w/the bard. As cool as it seems to have surfed every day for the last 35 years, to have never taken a vacation outside the Bay Area seems awful.

How depressingly narrow minded you two snobby morons sound. Paris, Berlin, Vermont...wow we're so impressed. Perhaps Dale can't afford much more. Do either of you idiots know anything about this dude ? The Sonoma Coast rivals beauty anywhere in the world and has a lot of great places to surf. Don't knock someone until you've walked in his shoes. He is enjoying his life and not bothering anyone. And he was surfin when other people were wiping your ass.

Dude, @tbone, chill. Perhaps I should have added "to me" after "awful", but I figured that was understood. To each his own. It just seems like an awfully narrow life *to me*. I don't know him from you, but I agree, from everything I've seen & read, he seems completely stoked w/the life he's chosen, and that's great. I certainly wasn't trying to suggest he should visit Vermont to make me happy.

Sheesh.

Sheesh, even Stacey's been to Vermont! She and I went on a syrup tour. Anyway...One minor point that senior BONE has, is that the SF Bay Area does offer a lot. Look, when shit was crappy here (ugh it still is), I made lemons outta lemonade, I guess. I had planned to leave Stacey at the doggie hotel, and go to South East Asia, but shit didn't work out, and neither did the surf, but I took it in stride, and got in anyways, hell we all did.
Dale just seems to do that quite a bit more :)
heh.
Good on him, and yeah, Bay Area for Life! Best place to be when you can't, or won't travel.

@Jack Johnson: if someone has surfed every day for the last 35 years, all it means is they haven't been inland.

It'd be possible to have experienced a wide variety of culture/geography while staying on the coast.

Yeah he kinda puts my goal of 250 sessions this year to shame, but I have Surfed on 3 coasts this year so I can't complain. 1 was even freshwater.

Love these quotes from Wikipedia.

According to Dale, he did this for a number of reasons: his wetsuit was damaged and he wanted to surf for a full year to force the manufacturer into replacing it (incorrectly interpreting the warranty) and that he attempted to beat what he thought was the record for the most consecutive days surfed (five thousand, two hundred and eighty), but was actually the record (in feet) for the longest distance surfed to shore.

While setting this record, Dale married his current wife, Kaye; raised his daughter, now a college student; and held several jobs. He went through thirty boards and twenty-eight wet suits. His daughter, Margo set a record of her own by being the first student in her school district to attend elementary through high school with perfect attendance.

Sorry guys. Meant to say Dale hasn't been to Sioux Falls, Pueblo, Saginaw or tucumcari in the last 35 years. Is that better?

While I think he's missing out on a lot of the planet's great sites and surf, you have to admire the dedication and apparent joy he takes in life. I think the real achievement is not getting nabbed by Mr. Whitey in that target rich environment that is the Sonoma Coast. I can't figure out if the odds are now in his favor or are heavily stacked against him.
