Dane Reynolds and New Beginnings

2621

Two weeks ago the ASP released its official roster for the 2012 World tour. There were 34 names on that list, but one name was conspicuously absent: Dane Reynolds.

For over a year, Reynolds overtly hinted that he wasn’t interested in competitive surfing. Or, at least, he struggled very publicly with the idea of competition. His demonstrative ambivalence, combined with his undeniable talent made him extraordinarily alluring to surf fans, and in a short span of time he became a surf media darling. It seems there is nothing more attractive to the surfing public as represented through magazines and websites than a seemingly uninterested savant. Through a fascinating combination of authenticity and careful marketing, Dane has managed to cultivate an impeccable image that embodies that sentiment. It’s difficult to discern the degree to which Reynolds’ self-awareness is meticulously calculated or genuine, but he should milk it. I think he’s known that for a while, and now, officially, he will.

What a bold decision. Or rather, it's nice when a $600 million dollar publicly traded company pays you to just be yourself.

It isn't that he's being paid to be himself. He's being paid to represent something that most of us can readily identify with: free surfing. Its not particularly brilliant but it is evident and obvious, why Vans et al would continue to sponsor someone who doesn't compete on the CT. Dane will have no probs selling shoes, shirts, and boards.

I'm not sure why anyone -- especially fuckwads like Chris Mauro -- is down on the drop-outs for this, but I have some ideas. Bruce Irons decided to bail on the tour and nobody said shit, because he maintained a stereotypical bronzed blonde image with a public persona no more complex than Justin Beiber (meanwhile, his brother was slowly killing himself as his sponsors and the surf media looked the other way).

But hey, question the ASP and the CT, grow a beard and scribble some art and start experimenting with board designs though, and... oh, you're some kind of head case? No.

One thing I'm sure of is that much of the people who inhabit the surf industry are fairly small minded and conservative when it comes to anything but waves and chicks. I worked in that insular little world known as the surf industry in Orange County in a previous career. The bro-culture down there is ridiculously conformist and "straight" compared to the rest of the world. Its really no surprise that the media is shitting on guys like Dane and Sterling for going in another direction. When I read stuff like this -- and the Mauro opinion piece that precipitated it -- I'm just reminded of why I left the biz, stopped buying anything non-essential (magazines, clothing made by surf brands, etc), and ceased paying attention to the CT beyond noting "oh, there's Kelly, winning again".

Oops, I ranted again.

Time to go surfing.

I follow the pros not at all... Too old to care, I guess. So I speak acknowledging I'm ignorant about it, and I appreciate your knowledge/insight, @Dakota.

But I thought Dane's letter was really good, aside from the ee cummings lack of capitalization. I thought the Mauro piece had some decent points, too, though. Although it was clear he was making broad generalizations/stereotypes.

And, end of the day, who gives a shit whether his sponsor is publicly traded or not? And why shit on them for continuing to support him? If it's a bad business decision, then the company will stop doing it. Or they'll suffer financially if they don't.

All this press lately about Dane Reynolds. I really had no idea of his influence and "surf star" status as I reside mostly, and happily, out of the loop on that stuff. But now that I'm informed I reckon we can all look forward to his sponsor's marketing of the new Dane Reynolds 'quirky hipster quick drying board shorts'...get a pair and you too can feel like a stand alone mavericky counter culture dude in the line up. The surf industry doesn't care if he is on the contest circuit as long as his "image" can sell their crap...and apparently they're banking on it.

It's weird that "pro" surfers get shit for wanting to be "free surfers" as their "job"... That's pretty much what all of snowboarding is these days, and no one seems to mind -- it's all about filming, for the vast majority of snowboarders at all levels of the professional pyramid. Same with skateboarding, but perhaps even more so.

Weird.

A fellow surfer said Dane was further down on a log in the cove at Rincon today. I guess he doesn't need to show off those crazy moves now that he's free surfing. Then again, it was chest high and super weak, I wish I had a log today too aha.
