looks like snake handling while falling down the face of a wave on something with the relative handling and response of an indo board rolling over a greased pig. this is what kills sup for me. even if you rip, you're a spastic kook. don't get me wrong, i'm not a hater... i love paddleboards, they're great.. for going fishing.

thumbs down all you want, its still bullshit. kooks on longboards in 3ft surf draw cleaner lines. and dave is a hell of a surfer, this is not a knock on him as a waterman, he has nothing to prove to anyone. then again, what do i know -- i can't stand jackson pollock paintings and others think he's a genius, despite chimps being able to deliver the same aesthetic results.

@1ptshark1. Get with it. Bashing sups is the cool thing like skinny jeans, slim fit tees, white Zinka face paint, and boring hipster soul arch twin finning. You need to conform to the new way, fake ass new age hippy techys are the future of surfing.
But beware, if you don't surf their way or look like them, they might try to ban you from what every beach they're "visiting".

Kook move at 2:55, don't sit inside from this guy... I'm surprised by all minus responses anytime someone knocks SUPs. WTF people? I wouldn't mind SUPs so much, but from my experience, every time I've seen anyone in the water who sort of knows how to handle those things -'sort of' being the operative words- they automatically assume they can catch ALL the fucking waves without any respect, or acknowledgement, for those around them. Maybe they think that being on a different wave-riding apparatus, they are absolved from any surfing etiquette, who the hell knows... That, as far as I'm concerned, qualifies them for permanent kookdom status.

Before there was sup there were longboards doing the same thing. There was a lot of bitching about that in the 80's when long boarding became popular again. There always Going to be someone coming up short in the lineup. It's your responsabillity to yourself to ride the right board. Not anyone else's. Surfing is always changing. It's the nature of the sport. If you can't change with it your gonna remain on the bottom of the totem pole.

I see where you are going with this and it's ok to talk about evolution. But you need to keep a couple of things in mind. First, longboards came before shortboards. When longboards made a comeback in the 80's, it was a shock to all the shortboarders who had to adjust to guys taking off 20 yards deeper and catching a lot more waves. However, understandings developed over time and some spots became more shortboarder friendly while others were more deemed to be longboarder spots. In other spots, they co-exist semi peacefully. The difference here is that longboards are a heck of a lot easier to control and handle than SUPs and people who ride longboards seem to have a reasonable appreciation for the rules of the lineup. Again, look at the poor guy about to get his teeth knocked out at 2:55 in the above video and consider the fact that this is actually a good surfer who's bailing. However good he is, he's still not able to hold his board and paddle when a set comes rolling. You can see how things are going to get a lot worse with less competent surfers...
The other thing you have to keep in mind is over-population, over-crowding, and the increasing lack of etiquette. If we were to follow this "logical evolution", and if I'm following you, then pretty soon, everyone would be riding one of those. I don't know how pretty a picture that would be.

If everyone was riding the same board there wouldn't be a reason for bitching then.
And also at least he's using a leash. There is a certain group of surfers th like to "log" without leashes. I won't mention any names. "skinny whiteface goons" and have had issues with letting they're boards go. Let's bitch about those guys.

I saw the "bail" at 2:55. He actually kicks his board to the shoulder and away from the surfer caught inside.Pretty smart. The guy rips...

Too bad, ....those were nice waves. What is up with the SUP warriors on this site? And I dont understand all the thumbs up for these guys and the thumbs down for people giving their opinion on the matter. SUP's really bum people out.....sort of anti stoke machines.
I was super stoked to surf the other day without somebody standing next to me the whole time. It was great! I was able to totally relax and look out on the sunset without seeing some dude standing in the way.
Would you go to a movie theatre and stand there during the whole show? Do people stand in front of people at church? Sometimes I wish we had ushers out in the lineup. Tell people to stop snorting and spitting everywhere, tell that one dude to stop singing, and to tell the guy up front to take a seat.
In society people are reminded of manners. We maintain some sense of manners to create a better living experience for everyone. I hope this translates out in the ocean a bit more....... Think of how you are affecting the others around you instead of just being selfish.

Waggy, why does it matter what came first. standup has been around before longboarding. So what, Ride what you like. But just because your not getting waves doesnt mean it's someone elses fault. It's yours. And about him kicking his board out it's obvious what he was doing he was wearing a leash. Like Bigfish brought up, what about "Barry Mcgee and his faithful band of white face anorexic clones" those guy's constantly paddle out without leashes. And, not that great of surfers either. Riding big heavy log's knowing they're boards are already beat to hell will let they're boards go in really heavy crowds. AND, have actually injured people severely. I haven't heard of any sup guy hurting anyone in the water. So, if it's a safety issue, your picking on the wrong people. Or if it's a wave count thing I think thats Your problem to figure out

At 2:55 the guy is chucking his board under the lip and away from himself because he's caught out of position and about to get throttled. No altruism is on display here since the short boarder is not really in harm's way. Camera angle just makes it appear as such. Not a SUPer here, not for, or against them either. Asshole's do ride any manner of boards...just like nice people do. The thing that truly amazes me, though, is how any SUPer could EVER be caught out-of-position with the likes of an "oar" in hand, and a horizon view clear to the fetch from whence the swells come.

I'll go back to my initial comment: what the fuck? @ Marklar: it is a kook move, the board is attached to the guy's foot with a leash, the white water is going to drag the board directly back inside from him, in other words, exactly where that other surfer is. @ 1ptshark1, didn't Laird Hamilton and Matthew McConaughay invent the SUP?
And what's with the shitty music, is that what you SUPers listen to?

1ptshark1, call it "deep and inside" (which, BTW, are two different things), or whatever you want...he's still out of position, period. And you really seem to be quite oversensitive...no OLB hugs for you lately, or what?

BTW, I dont know how many people have done this - but i re-ran the video from 39 to 41 seconds a few times, and it appears that the "shark" is really a dolphin; note the rounded top fin, and the up and down motion of the tail. The head shape also appears to be that of a dolphin. any one else have any other thoughts?

As long as the sup haters stay here on stokereport arguing and out of the water. I consider this a win for supers. I'm going to lm and though it's small, it is clean and sunny. I'm gonna have fun and get some exercise.
P.S. don't forget to stretch. Finger cramps can be a bitch.

This is getting good. We've got guys dissecting the video of a guy who obviously has a solid surfing background and talking about his "kook move." Do you guys even know how to surf. Let's post a video of your latest 2 foot joy ride and comment on the merits of your surfing. You guys also need to brush up on your surfing history so you can figure out how you ended up on a $800 5'10 that you don't know how to ride.

Are we still talking about SUPs? last fall, one was bugging the shit out of me, taking too many waves (I had clearly lined up for myself) and falling off his tank mid ride... That was pretty much the last time one got in the way. Considering how long it's been, I'm not too worried about them... So far.
