The dolphin hunting season starts today. Check out this report from Ric O'Barry (of 'the Cove' and 'Flipper' fame) to find out how to help end this!!
Dolphin hunting resumes in Japan

The international pressure might help, but the best way to end it is for them to generate pressure from inside Japan, from the Japanese people themselves.
Did they ever end up showing "The Cove" in Japan? I read awhile back it was generating controversy there and they postponed the screenings.

Honestly I wonder what dolphin tastes like. If it tastes as good as baby clubbed seal, I can see why they wouldn't want to stop eating it. I think we should be culturally tolerant. People have to eat. I personally share the common OH MY GOD THEY EAT DOLPHINS sentiment like with dogs and cats, but what remains, again, is the internal conflict with respect to cultural tolerance. So long as they don't whack'em at OB, and in NorCal, I think I could be cool with it. Dunno.

@p_s: I disagree. There are plenty of f'd up things that rankle, even if they're not in my backyard. These include gruesome dolphin slaughter, slavery, aspects of the sex trade, female circumcision, and more. We should stop that crap. I have no interest in "cultural tolerance" towards groups which do these things.

More questions and thoughts:
There's a (cultural) division about the way people perceive animals, and in this case, namely dolphins. What are we going to do about it? We've told them not to do it. They do it. Should we go to war over it? Should we sanction them in the form of trade sanctions? What price are we both willing to pay to stop this bad behavior? If one wants to draw memes between dolphin killing and clitoris removal that's fine, but what's the difference between killing a dolphin and a cow for eating? Ubiquity doesn't make it any more moral, just as running someone over with a car purposefully probably will just get you vehicular manslaughter as opposed to pulling a nine and getting murder 1.
I think NIMBY is the only thing we got unfortunately for the short term.
Long term, there could be hope I guess. Shit we got the Berlin Wall down :) Go Gipper!

i'd question the intellectual honesty of being against dolphin slaughter but not against cow, pig, chicken or whatever slaughter. the fact that dolphins are cool in the water and have a high degree of intelligence doesn't make them any more worthy than a stupid cow. in fact, you could argue that the cows need more protection because they are even more helpless. what i don't like is the way that hollywood (and well-meaning wankers like dave rastovich) jump on a cause and decide that it's important. we have a much bigger problem in the ocean than the needless slaughter of a couple hundred thousand dolphin every year. the over fishing of tuna and other high in the food chain pelagic feeders is a much more dire situation with much larger impact on our ocean and environment. it's great that dave rasta wants to have a circle of love in a bloody dolphin death camp, but where the hell is he when millions of tuna are dragged out of the ocean and sold for sushi here and in japan (yes, japan again). don't get sucked into the cause du jour by hollywood douchebags and their celebrity shills.

One could also make the argument that factory chicken farming, where the birds spend their entire lives in the same small cage for its entire life, is far more inhumane.
Or pig farms where the pigs have enough room to lie down (they put them in a 2'x7' box), but not enough room to turn around.
Those nice methods happen here in the good ole' US of A and the great majority of the chicken and pork we consume is raised in this manner.

@p_s: Your first comment parsed (to me, anyway) as "Lol dolphin killing funny. Its far from me; I don't care." That's a stance I disagree with.
If your considered comment is "Our meat industry sucks, first cast out the beam out of thine own eye..." I can respect that.
@h20: Slaughtering dolphin is wrong. The global oceanic fish industry is also wrong. Its easier to stop the dolphin portion first.

Well, honestly, it's not funny, since I've already alluded to the fact that I like them and swim with them...but sure, I started out with 'lol NIMBY'. But going on in that first comment, I simply wanted to point out it's a hard problem to solve, because it's a cultural issue more than anything. I'm not sure telling people to not eat something they've been eating and practicing for thousands? of years is a good idea. What's left aside from years and years of diplomacy and negotiations? Short term lolnimby, sadly. :(

maybe we should just start culling people who eat too much fish.
ps. animal husbandry != hunting/killing wild animals. poor analogy. flawed logic. dog don't hunt.

@dakota: I completely disagree.
1) the issue of killing dolphins for food and 2) the methods of raising animals for human consumption are both under the umbrella of a larger moral dilemma: 3) what should human ethics be with regards to the killing and consuming of other sentient beings?

i agree with you mr. kook, on the broader scope of the ethics.
my little postscript was in response to h2o's opening statement re: intellectual dishonesty.
farming pigs and cows and poultry is not killing wild animals. i don't think someone's being dishonest if they oppose the latter but still eat an omelette. one hopes the eggs were free range raised, but beyond that...
otoh.. pigs are said to be pretty damn smart, dingo... i haven't stopped eating them entirely but i cut way, way down on pork consumption years ago. am i intellectually dishonest? hmm...

I feel the same as piss chill does HAHA! j/k (love the name though) However I see the point of wild vs raised also.
I also feel that if you take from wild over and over again at the wrong times (right before reproduction) in time numbers will fail. I have mixed feelings here. But I can't help but feel bad when you see them die and all that blood.
But the people like to eat them. I don't.
Maybe if you change the peoples mind to NOT eat them 1st, then you have no market for it. Yes?
