El Niño's back - rainstorms to batter Bay Area

2608

It rained a bit during the week and there were big waves along the coast, but Mother Nature has yet to come through with an honest to goodness deluge. And the much ballyhooed master of tempestuous weather, El Niño, appears to be missing in action.

Well, don't get your waders in a bunch. Forecasters say the sleet is about to hit the fan.

"What we just experienced is a harbinger of a major change in the weather pattern from what we've been experiencing over the last few weeks," said Warren Blier, the science officer for the National Weather Service in the San Francisco and Monterey Bay areas. "We're looking at a series of storms over the next week to a week and a half that will be consistent with an El Niño event."

California is experiencing what Blier called a moderate El Niño weather pattern, but the large, intense storms normally associated with the pattern have so far been blocked by a high pressure system over California.
