Rant - Epic Barrel

Is there any bodysurfer that caught a huge clean barrel this afternoon around 3? I got it on camera!

The title clearly says "Epic barrel at ###### Street" so clearly the #### is not doing much to keep this spot anonymous. Sick pipe though!

Looks to maybe have a Hand Plane in the right hand. Do those things really work?

MrPhotographer

@A-Framer I noticed it right away thats why I changed it asap.

wow, that's awesome.

Oh ya no worries awesome shot! That spot kinda holds its own as far as crowd control on days like this. Not many Linda Mar people could make the paddle, albeit commit and charge a 10 foot tube.

Danny Hess. Thanks for removing the location. For what it's worth, much appreciated. And yes, they do work, but on days like today, they can easily be lost.

Thanks-

Unbelievable! I love the way he moves into that casual, controlled side-slip in the last frame. Not sure how it ended up but what phenomenal positioning.

Those are bad-ass shots! Thanks for posting!

Hand planes are fun as hell and they give you a little additional planing surface to hold your line or make it across flatter sections of the wave. I built one out of an old skateboard deck after being inspired to do so by Korduroy.tv and highly recommend doing the same if you're into it: http://www.korduroy.tv/2010/skateboard-handplane-surf-sufficient

I love taking that thing out on days that don't look fun for surfing. I can score little nuggets on the inside and just get stoked. Hess handplanes must be like Cadillacs compared to my home-made jalopy, but I like the idea that I built it out of my own untalented hands from materials that would have otherwise gone in the trash. I like to imagine I look like the guy in these photos charging, but I'm sure reality is quite different. Still, what's that quote? "I've had some bad days surfing, but never a bad day bodysurfing."

Yeah, thank god you removed the street name. Now no-one will go back in time to crowd up the break...

Hi everybody. This is Mrniceguy. You may have noticed that I had to create a new login. It seems that stoke report couldn't handle me anymore as indicated by my comments and rants not showing up. I decided to write you guys in a comment section because if I wrote a rant, it would get voted away in like 2 minutes. This post has nothing to do with the picture above. I have to admit I was pretty bewildered that I would get blocked. Did I threaten anyone? no. Did I call anyone any names? no. Was I annoying? yea probably. But the fact that I get cock blocked from this site for expressing disagreement just goes to show that stokereport is not a real surfing community. It is disconnected from reality. So please, when you are on this site, know that it is a bunch of bullshit. If you get 45 thumbs up on this site for your stupid report, it doesn't mean shit about what kind of approval you'll get in real life. I remember one guy on here was getting all hyped up about freedom of speech to defend his reports. What about mine? So yea, I'm a little pissed. I don't feel like such a nice guy right now. The good news for me is that my injury is better now and I've been back in the water, so I'll see you out there. Ok? Ok.

sharkturd

OK, mrniceguy dos...or is it 2.0? No problem wit you on this end...no finger, just one thumb up....and one observation...it must mean something more than shit for your continued posts. No? Then why bother?

stokereport

@mrniceguy: We've been pretty clear on the policy on StokeReport:

  1. Trolling isn't acceptable behavior: http://stokereport.com/content/what-are-community-standards-follow-stoke...
  2. We don't edit content, but we do have automated measures in place to limit the distribution of content generated by spammers/trollers: http://stokereport.com/content/i-created-reportrant-where-did-it-go

I don't want to go into detail about how the system identifies spammer/trollers, but I can give you a clue. If almost every comment you post gets voted down by the community, the system will likely think you're either spamming or trolling the site.

Good to hear that your injury is better. Staying out the water makes me grumpy too.

haha, given that emperical infrographic, he's good at what he does, so in my mind, that's a success and +1.

Eh, that filter could use some work. You've got to take upvotes into account and put weight on them. A real spammer or a true troll is almost universally never going to get upvotes. Someone who expresses unpopular opinions with a minority of support and winds up with an overall negative shouldn't be booted. That's sorta like a "tyranny of the masses", isn't it?

In other news, I have yet to see a StokeReport bumper sticker on anyone's vehicle.

Nice fucking wave, Mark.

@dakota: What makes you think that the spammer/troller detector doesn't factor in upvotes?

And yea, amazing wave.

@dakota, I'd rather see StokeReport hats on everybody first. And please, no trucker or flex-fit hats, just adjustable bands in the back for those of us who have fat heads, sz 8 on me -^-

Kudos to mark. In the last shot though doesn't it look like he's about to fall out of the sky and eat it? Did he make it? I gots to know.

@King of Kooks I've uploaded the drop in and the wipe out for you.

marklukach

Hey there, it's been a while since I've checked out SR, nice to be back. I connected with Mr. Photographer and was able to confirm time and location, so yes, that there is me.

King of Kooks, you bring out a fantastic point. When it's steep and hollow like it was the other day, I have grown to trying to dig my handplane and shoulder into the face to hold a high line in the wave. I've found that's the best way to get barrels when bodysurfing in bigger conditions, and even sometimes make it out of them.

Well that sure as shit didn't happen on this wave. I guess I dug in too deep, the stand-up surfing equivalent of burying a rail, and stalled wayyyyy too much. I basically did a 180 of sorts, as you can see starting to happen in the 3rd shot. What you have to leave to the imagination is that I basically went feet-first down the face as the foam ball ate me up. Pretty hilarious wipe out, and one of the strangest I've experienced while bodysurfing. No idea that someone in the dunes caught it on film. And just like much of surf photographry, the moment before a wipe-out turned into a photogenic moment. So thanks for that, Mr. Photographer.

Regarding the StokeReport bumper stickers... Why would anyone in their right mind put one of those on their car knowing that some disgruntled a-hole who lurks on this board might bash your windows or try to assault you for it?

Mr. Niceguy is right-on. I would guess that the majority of the people "thumbing up/down" are the ones that don't realize that there are cultural differences and rules here on the Coastside than from where they came from in the Great Lakes / Florida / South of Pt. Conception. It is true that most of the ideas and attitudes here are not connected to reality and I'll second that if you are going to report locations and times you should own it and tell everybody else in the lineup that you are going to report it when you get out of the water. I'm sure it will go over really well. Please let me know how that goes.

Capra

I'm from north of point conception (south bay/santa cruz area)... 3rd generation, in fact. And I could give two shits who says what about any given spot. You don't 'own' any one break any more than anyone else in the lineup does, unless you're a delusional meth-head. Ever heard of google earth? Or any of a million other Internet resources? Gone are the days of "secret spots". Accept the new technology of the information age or move to the woods and build a shack like Ted Kaczynski did. And please, let me know how THAT goes.

Michele Norris

When you go surf Stockton Avenue, give the "I could give two shits who says what" speech above. I'd like to actually see how THAT goes.
