Extraordinary pictures of great whites stripping a whale carcass shows they're actually quite picky eaters

631

Ever since Jaws, great whites have had a reputation as killing machines that has never seemed much point questioning. However, that could all be about to change - after a study into the fearsome predators' dining habits.

Scientists towed a 36ft Brydes whale carcass into a well-known hunting ground for the animals in an exercise aimed at documenting how they tackled the huge free lunch.

And these amazing pictures show how up to 30 of them stripped a single whale carcass - and gave an 'extraordinary' insight into how the much-feared predators behave.

This seems like a great way to dispose of a whale.

"Kock added: 'Permission was granted by the authorities to have the dead whale towed to nearby Seal Island where the carcass was less of an issue and the sharks could help solve the clean-up problem. "

Why don't we tow our whale out to the Farallon Islands and let the great whites have at it rather than burying it?

I remember this issue came up on a beach near Sydney Australia. They tried to drag the shark out to sea but it had already decomposed to the extent that they couldn't really get a good grip on it and it broke up in the surf as they tried to drag it out. This caused an even bigger, smellier mess.

@sharky, " Why don't we tow our whale out"? The short answer is, as always, money. The long answer...it's easier to bury, and not so easy to tow an already beached and badly decomposed behemoth off the land and out to sea where there is always the possibility the carcass may again drift back to another shore. Thanks for this educational post, sharkster....more compelling evidence of the "taste test" theory. Although that's little consolation to us "taste and compare' morsels sitting in the lineup.

"'It provides evidence that when they bite into a surfboard, or kayak or person wearing a wetsuit they can immediately determine it's not something they want to eat." Too bad that tiny nibble is from a 5000lb landlord.

Whew, for a second I thought this rant was going to be the video of the sharks eating the whale...you know, that one a while back with the shark boners. Hooray for science.

I, for one, @sharky am not a tow-in fan. If that whale can't paddle into hades, or whale heaven, then it shouldn't be out there.

Anyone know where these photos were taken?

@joneser the link says off Cape Town SA. With the dead whale at OB I was wondering why the sharks in the area had not eaten more of it. Especially since we've been hearing about increased numbers of GWS around lately. In contrast I've heard that Orcas prefer to eat the tongue of whales they kill first, this seems to say the sharks prefer the fat.
