Rant - Filet-o-face

Last years carnage. Mini-Simmons, tail to the face, ER tech said it looked like a 7. They stitched the eyebrow, only taped the cheek back together with Steri-strips (butterfly closures). $4000 billed to insurance (saw opthamologist too, missed eyball) insurance only paid $2500. Sinus on that side not quite the same since. Out of the water for only two weeks though

What happened to the ear?

What were you dropping into a sold 20 - 30 footer? Most likely not on a mini-simmons but that is the way I would tell it after a few beers. Glad it turned out okay

The ears still there. Happened on a small crappy day in August. Paddled for a thigh-high crumbler, didn't catch it, sat ot tail to back out but board went over with the white water, then shot out backwards right back at me. "It's small weak surf what could go wrong?"

Moral of the story: hang on to your board.

On the bright side, you're going to make an awesome Batman villain.

"Sorry, "Lucky Seven," looks like you just crapped out." (/punch.)

Wait. Maybe that's not the bright side.

Tail to the face, or fin? Looks like a fin-slice to me... (perhaps they are one-in-the-same?)

I put Surfco fins on most of my boards. I'll take a bruise before a slice any day.

Both, the tail got the eyebrow, trailer fin got the cheek, there is probably a bit of fiberglass left in there, the tip if the fin was crunched. The RFC fins on the Vernor are pretty thin, it's a set designed for those boards.

How do you like the way the Surfco fins work? I have contemplated the idea but never made the switch.

Any time my cord loads up I worry a little. Been hit in the face once but didn't bleed, had another whip by just in front of my face. Bummer that it was a crappy day too. Take care of the scar tissue.

I like the surfco fins very much, they have a few different type. I use the performance on my shortboards (which I can't tell the difference from stock fins), and powerflex on my 7'6" through longboard (except my Desert Island).

I've been hit in the tricep by the performance fins when going over the falls (covering up my head). Huge, elongated bruise on the tricep, but no gashes in me or my suit (i could see the stripe on the wetsuit where the rubber edge of the fin hit/slid across). They have some good info on their site.

I'm no pro, nor do I have the ego to think that I could surely be able to tell the difference between FCS vs. surfco fins. Though, I haven't tried them on my 5-fin S-Winger...I like the set-up I've got on it, and am not ready to mess with it yet (until I take one in the head probably).

Call Surfco up, they are good to talk with and they can let you know what type of fin would work best for your board(s). Their stomp pads are great too. Hope all is good for you now.

Here's mine, a few years ago. End of ride, meant to lie down on board but somehow caught the tail and the nose came up and whacked my lip. The sad look in the eyes probably more from the $3k bill to my uninsured and broke-at-the-time ass.

I remember when the guy was stitching me up, everything he'd grab, even a little bit of gauze, he'd enter in a little computer next to his table. When I got the bill every little bit of thread was itemized.

Not that I'm complianing, they did a great job and you can hardly see the scar now. In fact I wish there was just a bit more scar since it makes a good story.

Got lit up yesterday....kicked out at the end and I pushed board away from me, apparently not enough. Board meet calf, calf board. Lit up for the rest of the day. Stupid board sports, they get you, eventually. Not as dramatic as the gnar, but still sharing because it's quite common. So make your underwater 'X' when you go down, and kick that shit away from you as much as possible.
