Why sad face? This could be a great sign, one less surfer in the water and hopefully more douchebags will follow this guy's path and leave more waves for the rest of us!

so in order to establish a long lasting relationship you have to compromise your independence and give up activities that bring you happiness? that's a horrid thought. well, here's hoping that dude will one day return to the water.

Hate to break it to you, fspark, but that's what relationships are, all relationships=compromise. All you who automatically think she is the instigator of "giving up the dream" must have terrible wives/GFs...either that, or you guys are hopelessly p-whipped. Her use of the word "finally" in the sales ad only indicates to me that she is happy about the lost dream but not that she necessarily pushed him to it. The dude may have been a total kookson constantly getting thrashed and smashed and not having any fun...maybe he's ready to move onto the next "cool thing", like SUP yoga, or whatever. There's already enough speed bumps in the water, I can only hope his example becomes trendy.

hey sharkturd, you might be right about that, who knows? i had to read that ad a bunch of times to figure it out, and i'm still not sure exactly what she meant, but i do know what i think it sounds like. at any rate, i don't mind compromise, but the best compromises occur in conjunction with compatibility, and i don't find most people to be willing to compromise too often, as people tend to be extremely selfish.

Bummer that you find most people uncompromising and extremely selfish, spark. Don't forget, when speaking of relationships, compromise is a two-party system. Each gives up a little something for the greater good...that's always worked decently enough for me. Not saying that you are, but could it be you who is unyielding? Who knows, and let's hope, maybe the dude is now getting fantastic wake up sex just for losing his "surfer" charade.

And to that I say, as surfers, best we find a partner to have wake up sex AND surf. Just sayin' what's best.

why the hell would one be with someone whom does not support their surfing habit? The guy must be a tool.

@turd relationships are about compromise but they are also respect, happiness and understanding. I'm lucky because my lady respects me and understands that I love her and surfing. She wants me to be happy and knows surfing makes me happy therefore she has no problems with me surfing. I find that women can be overbearing when it comes to relationship (guys tend to be lazy) so I put my foot down quickly but in a direct and honest way. I'm not very selfish so yes I will help her dad install hardwood floors but I'm sure as hell not going to all of her family functions.

true that, yahguy. But the guy was a kook, couldn't cut it and quit...the charade done. He gave up nothing. He realized that he set his goal (dream) too high, let it go, and now enjoys the "fruits" of that compromise...the compromise that really wasn't. Xrist, the dude couldn't even place his own CL ad.

@ turd - selfishness is an intrinsic part of human nature. that is how people survived eons ago. in this day and age, it tends to manifest itself as a negative quality. the rest is too complicated to type out. see ya round.

Humans survived because of there ability to cultivate agriculture.
after the flood subsides, it will be just builders and farmers again. there will be no place to plug in our computers
