First Aid and CPR classes

Rant - First Aid and CPR classes

An earlier rant turned into a good discussion on CPR (http://stokereport.com/rant/blacks-surfer-comes-back-life).

I took a first-aid certification class ($50 bucks) at Bay Area RedCross and that was informative but it didn't cover CPR. But good overall material and they also have separate CPR classes (I think $65 bucks): http://bit.ly/9A7zCl (I think their site is down right now...?)

But I just recently noticed that Sports Basement does free CPR classes: http://www.sportsbasement.com/classes/IMGS/CPRPAGE.jpg

I'm probably going to do the one at the Bryant street location this upcoming Monday (March 15th).

Update from Ron at Sports Basement Bryant:

"Registration for the April 16 class opens on March 16. Classes fill up quickly, so I recommend that you call into the store on that date to guarantee yourself a spot.".

So looks like classes are full till the 16th at least at the Bryant location.

The contact at the Presidio store is Troy. His email is: tbouris@sportsbasement.com

Related: Ranata Clark at the San Francisco Paramedic Association informed me that although they do offer FA/CPR training, it is not for drowning. She recommend the American Heart Association. Does anyone know if the Sports Basement training covers drowning?

CPR is a very good tool to have, but as far as first aid if you are going to do anything out of doors I would suggest staying away from standard red cross type courses. Nothing against these classes but they are for people walking down the street seeing an accident and calling 911. I can speak about wilderness first aid courses- it is a longer commitment but the material is a lot more applicable for those of us spending time out of doors and deals with more of the injuries and issues you may one day hope your buddy knows how to help you with. There are a lot of local courses. here is a link to WMI of NOLS, one of the better providers: http://www.nols.edu/wmi/courses/wildfirstaid.shtml
