Thomas Hickenbottom whispers more than he speaks. But somehow, the Westside's former power surfer still manages to carry his excitement about the upcoming fundraiser thrown in his honor through his guttural artificial voice.
“We're going to have a big party and celebrate life basically,” Hickenbottom said. “That's what it's all about.”
The local author utters every thought from his lungs, pressing the stoma that hangs on his throat every time he needs to let the words out. The tube replaced the vocal chords Hickenbottom lost to cancer, but it has surely not hampered his sense of humor.
