Fremont man attacked by shark near Pleasure Point

A great white shark, estimated to be up to 18 feet long, sheared through the front end of a kayak about a quarter-mile from the popular surfing spot known as Pleasure Point on Saturday, authorities said.

A 52-year-old Fremont man was fishing from his 13.5-foot kayak when he felt the shark bump up against the back of the boat. Within seconds, the shark lifted up the kayak and attacked the front, Santa Cruz County sheriff's deputies said.

The man, thrown from the kayak, was unharmed in the 8:30 a.m. attack. He was plucked from the ocean by a boater nearby who had witnessed the incident.

I always get fidgety when I'm at LM and there's kayak fisherman a hundred yards away putting his bait into the water.

Like to hear the chumming part confirmed. Not that they don't hit 'yakers sans chum. Is having a stringer considered chumming?

These Santa Cruz sharks seem to be more aggressive than sharks elsewhere, maybe they are being affected by the meth runoff?

Chum Recipe- Take sardines and other fishy giblets. Use knife and chop into paste. Insert into chum bag and throw over the side of your boat.....now just wait for fish to arrive. The sardines have been running this month and there is a lot of bait in the water. Watch all the seagulls and other marine life in the area and they will confirm. Most the fishermen are using live sardines as bait or some pattern like a sardine. I heard the guy was chumming from a buddy I know that lives and surfs in the area. There is no coincidence that we see sharks when we see sardines. They all follow the food. Best not be you! Be safe and be aware of the bait fish activity around you.
