Fun Rivalry Among Surfers Becomes Deadly

1460

SANTA CRUZ, Calif. -- Before last Friday's homicide in Santa Cruz, professional surfer Darryl "Flea" Virostko used to associate himself as a westsider by covering his board with Westside symbols.

But after Carl Reimer, 19, was fatally shot, those symbols on Virostko's boards are covered up.

Reimer was shot and killed near a storage shed at 90 Grandview Street after a day of surfing and hanging out with friends. Police said they think the shooting was a gang hit, even though Reimer wasn't a gang member.

Edit: Deleting my comments on this post. There's already enough stupid debate I don't like seeing on SR, and the last thing I need is to get involved in a back-and-forth over race and immigration.

When I was at UC (many many years ago) the Eastside/Westside thing could get you seriously heckled..
Or maybe a fat lip for dropping in when on the "other side" as it were..
But it had that frat rivalry mentality and not much "real" violence to it..

However you mix surf "localism" with gangs turf and respect issues and you get a whole other level of bad vibes...
As if we needed one more reason to chill on the localism thing...

Unreal. It's so sad that we are what we are sometimes.

Maybe Arizona has it right ? Been surfing for 30 years, had localism but not this bull shit. Gangs and guns are for losers.

@kooktastic: Or Flash on the iPad ;)

We need some good surf in this region, and soon, before we all turn on each other...

"Police will not say what exactly lead to the shooting of Reimer, only that he was proud of the westside community where he lived."
