The Rip Curl Pro Search San Francisco surfing contest at Ocean Beach wrapped up Monday afternoon with 17-year-old Gabriel Medina winning the event.

The Rip Curl Pro surfing contest at Ocean Beach was the first professional surfing event in San Francisco in decades, and it included several notable incidents, including an alleged shark sighting and a new World Champion.

The event kicked off Tuesday with warm weather and hundreds of spectators flocking to Ocean Beach to watch.

On the first day, surfer Dusty Payne, of Hawaii, left the water during the middle of a heat after he said he saw a shark in the water. There was no confirmation about a shark in the water and the contest continued.

On Wednesday, Kelly Slater won in a heat at the contest, scoring him enough points on the ASP Tour to clinch the World Title, or so it was thought at the time.

Slater later pointed out to the tour that due to a mathematical error, he had actually not captured enough of points to claim the title.

Medina did it by catching a lot of waves and surfing the hell out of them. If he can stay healthy and keep his head straight, he's got the talent to be a world champ. For sure a deserving OB champ.

That whole thing turned out to be way more fun than I thought it would be, and I didn't even go down there once.

ya the finals heat started off exciting including medina dropping into a bomb seconds after the horn to start to heat. but the second half of the heat definitely was lully so it was tough for parko to get anything worth the 9+ that he needed (if he had made the air... who knows??)
