I want to get a new camera to take out on the water with me. The Lumix seems to have the best reviews online, anyone used one? Does the battery last in cold water?

It works great and is the best game in town, IMO.
The 10' resistant model isn't so hot, because that's 10' of non moving bath water, or a pool in Las Vegas. If you get the 30' model it'll be more rugged and impervious to a bit more of the reality you'll face at OB.
Also, as a reminder, combine with goldenhourcompany.com to close the loop :)
I've heard good things about the Lumix. I'd advise against Pentax Optio. Both my Optio W80 and W90 quickly developed corrosion on the computer connection port rendering it unusable. Then W80 flooded and died after less than a year http://surfergrrrl.blogspot.com/2010/09/rip-pentax-optio-w90.html
I'm being extra careful to keep the seal on the W90 clean. So far, so good...
I have one and like it. For some reason, I seem to easily get wax all over the thing while in the water (yes, on the lens). Pics are decent, but I haven't (yet) figured out how to get something I'm really happy with. Just need to keep shooting. The ability to shoot 720p video is pretty handy.
Battery life is fine. I don't think the thing charges via USB cable which seems like a supremely stupid omission.
Compact, tough. Works well on land and water. Worth it.
Second the goldenhourcompany.com wrist mount recommendation. I've got the w90 as well, I've been rinsing it when i get home and cleaning the seals with a q-tip. The seals on this type of ruggedized, waterproof point&shoot are supposedly the weak link.
Good luck. Can't wait to see the pix.
I had a Lumix with 10x zoom and bought the water housing for it. It def wasn't as compact as the above, but the quality of pics, in the water and out was excellent. So A+ for the brand at least.

In my experience the waterproof cameras sacrifice a lot in performance. So for years I've been buying high end canon point and shoot cameras with a $130 waterproof housing. The housing is waterproof to 120 ft and they are bomb / dirt / sand proof. Check out:
www.digideep.com for a list of cameras and their respective housings.
I have no experience w/ the Lumix but I can definitely agree that the Pentax Optio's are hunks of shit.
Third the recommendation of Golden Hour's Wrist Shot: http://surfergrrrl.blogspot.com/2010/07/wrist-shot-camera-case-review.ht...
+1 on Pentax being a -1. I had their version as of 3 years ago. Worked for a few months, took good looking shots, and then gave up the ghost while gently wading in 2 feet of water. Their customer service just argued with me until I gave up trying
