Do most of you wait the 72 hours after a rain to go out or do you just go for it and take the chance on getting sick?

Pun on some earplugs and have at it. The first few rains of the year are the worst. (Not that it has rained much this year.)

Depends on how good the swell is after the rain. I'll be riskier if it's truly going off, but otherwise I wait it out. I've found that sickness from surfing in poopy water can last for a long time.

Usually inversely proportional to desperation. I'll give it a day or two to flush out unless I'm rilly rilly desperate.
I kinda like surfing in the rain. Usually fewer people at least.
I'm up-to-the-minute with booster shots fwiw.

Rain? If it's overly flooding, stay OUT of the water. Surf away from storm drains. Mild rain, constantly flushing, then go for it. Use your plugs, and flush your sinuses and ears with a baking soda/warm water/salt solution post session. Helped a lot when I used to surf Ventura or La Jolla post rain. This am 7ish looked VERY good on the ######...

I love the idea of surfing in the rain. I've been out a few times when the sky opened up on me. It's awesome to hear the rain fall on the ocean and the moody sky is something to see.
That said, I do worry about water quality. My immune system blows. I haven't gotten sick yet from the ocean but I don't want to chance it when the sewers are overflowing. Mild rain seems like it's fine, downpours like this...no way. I'm staying in tomorrow. Santa Con is influencing that decision, but so it water quals.

Depends on how long it's been since I lasted surfed. It's been 8 days (!), so if there are waves, I'm going out.

My theory is that the first rain of the year is the worst. Never go out the fist day after that. After that it is important to go out and build your resistance to all illnesses. I have not been sick for many years due to this. I can have a co-worker basically sneeze in my face and it is nothing compared to crap out in the water. Wash those ears out all times a year is always a good thing as bird crap can get in there.

I think we already had some rain before this latest storm, so if there is surf on Monday I am going for it and will thoroughly rinse sinuses and ears.

I'm with @surfergrrrl - I hadn't surfed in 8 days so I went out at LM yesterday. A total waste of time from a surfing point of view, but good for the soul. Jury's out as to whether it'll be bad for my immune system...
