Good / Fair forecast?

Rant - Good / Fair forecast?

Why has there been good and fair forecasts on Stokereport, when the waves are crappy? The other day it said Good, I went to the beach to find Double overhead poop dumpers at the middle of OB. Don't believe the hype. Big swell does not always mean good waves... duh.

I have to agree with the poster....conditions seem to be overstated on here. I was out a few days ago in marginal conditions. I got one epic left (in a 2 hour session)...but I'd still have to say the conditions were marginal at best. One good wave does not make the report good or good++

oh no...you guys are on the forecast crap again...it just don't matter. You get a general picture for the size, general picture of the wind, and you make decisions based on experiences and hunches. Every model on the computer is essentially a Schayler2000 derivative. Now go forth, get some friends, and get some where you think it will be best.

Why have a model then? Thats just dumb. It's not like we wait for SR to post good then we surf, of course we will take the info with a grain of salt and make an educated guess where to surf, but then what''s the point of having it on the site when it is total BS. DUH.......

The good and fair metric refers SOLEY to post-session pastries. Nothing else.
Plan accordingly.

it took me a minute to post this because i was laughing so hard. you people actually come here for the surf forecasting technology? hilarious. this is a community site masquerading as a forecasting site, but the name says it all. it's a community of stoked people, some of whom share their own real world reports (which invariably are more useful than the average forecast). if you want actual forecasting, i suggest you supplement your reading with swellinfo.com, surfline.com, et al..

most of the forecasts / computer models seem to use a combination of buoy height, period, & wind. While that's probably the best / only way to do an automatic forecast, the ACTUAL surf conditions within easy drive (###### to 45 minutes south) vary incredibly.

In fact, there's no real way to summarize the 'conditions' that exist at any given time, because they will change dramatically from hour to hour and also by location.

I guess webcams are some assistance. Otherwise, agree with Piss... gotta get out there yourself or get live 'by the minute' info from the bro network...

My morning interweb surf check is 13 bookmarks. StokeReport being 1 of 13.

No one comes for the forecasting, I come to this site to get some stoke while working all day behind a computer and read all of the hilarious comments and stabs at fellow surfers. I just happen to see "good" the other day for the first time and got more stoked, but from my live network at the beach, my friends all said it was crap. So of course I will always check myself, and with friends and find the best place to surf. But then whats the point of having it?

Out of curiosity, which are you talking about, A or B?

The model is based on a combination of the s/n ratio and distribution on the swell spectrum, the wind speed and direction (both local and a few miles at sea) and the swell size and direction.

It's tuned for SFOB.

It's hard to tune.

I wrote it to amuse myself.

I'll take "B" bob. Current conditions, not predicted forecast. What do I win?

stokereport

Yea, the current conditions are based purely on the model, not recent reports. It would be fun to correlate the output of the model with reports from SFOB ... even more fun to automagically tune the model based on the observed data. I'd probably do it too if I didn't have a real job.

The forecast model is fine as-is in my opinion. I'm not sure that the post surf reports are reliable anyway. After all, everyone has an agenda. I don't post reports from my sessions for several reasons: 1. It violates the cardinal rule against self hooting. 2. I don't want anybody else to leave work too (and crowd-out my double session). 3. My buddies would beat the crap out of me. 4. I'd come across as a barney if the Wise report is luke warm (ahem- dude claiming "amazing good ++" on Wednesday night).

Being off by 50 yards on you paddle choice, or a half hour early or late, can be the difference between stellar and terrible at OB.

How about taking the Pitchfork angle? I gave this morning a 3.5 overall. It got extra points because it wasn't crowded and I saw more women than men. Hence it was cooler. Or at least it wasn't consciously trying to be cool. Lost points due to lack of anything rideable. Of course the extra .5 points was due to cold water which is always cooler than warmer water.

"women"??? there were 3 people out on the n/or/th e/nd, one of them was me, a woman. is that what you mean? or are you referring to trannies?

I paddled out at the other end around 8:00. There was one woman and one guy out then. After they gave up, two other women paddled out just before I threw in the towel. It almost like Bolinas in so many ways.
