Rant - Good idea or bad idea - Drive to costa rica ?

I got invited to drive to costa rica in May when my friend moves back there.

Anyone done it?
With all of the current hostility in Mexico regarding kidnappings and murders,
would you do it?
Not to mention El Salvador, Guatemala, Honduras, Nicaraguara.

Some more background - We're both total gringos from the east coast. His spanish is better than mine. I would need some serious Rosetta stone or time in the mission to feel even conversational.

There's still a ton of research to do before making a decision. Hence the post to a public surfing related forum ;)

The joys and perils of this type of effort are humorously documents in Alan Weisbecker's book In Search of Captain Zero. I reviewed it here: http://thewatermanslibrary.com/Site/InSearchofCaptainZero.html.

Net-net: probably a great time with the always present potential for disaster via theft, crooked cops, drug violence, broken boards, etc.

I tried to talk a buddy into this same plan during grad school. Another guy overheard us and mentioned he did the same trip in 1994. He said it was more or less OK, until they got to Chiapas and met the Zapatistas. Between that and the old worries about getting pulled over by local cops or shaken down by federales sound quaint.

I think it's a great idea. I've been living in Nicaragua for a year now. While I don't live on the Pacific side (I live on the Caribbean coast), I try to make it to the Pacific side when I can to surf. Overall, I think that driving at least the Nicaragua portion would be mellow. You might get pulled over now and then by an odd cop looking to score a buck, but they really won't bother you much. I think the only challenging part would be navigating as the roads are all poorly marked. And having a vehicle (as opposed to relying on buses) to access spots in Nicaragua could get you to a lot of empty waves. I say go for it!

i know its not the same thing but i bought a motorcycle in santiago chile a while back without a license to ride it and traveled around 4 countries down there with it. my advice would be to research which border crossings down there are the easiest / hardest and make sure you have your papers. if you got that, you should have Nooo problems aside from the random $20 bribe.

if you are seriously considering it, i would suggest visiting the following website

http://www.horizonsunlimited.com/hubb/

it is a motorcycle travel forum about how to get around internationally overland. you can totally use it for how to get a car through all the countries. just search the Central America forums and you will get TONS of info from people who have done it.

my $0.02 - do it. it's awesome.

Guessing Chris Wilson decided to stop taking his meds after his trip. You would think a trip like that would mellow a fat man out. Just the opposite in Chris Wilson's case. Full and anger and hate. Take your meds Chris Wilson, they're good for you.

Do it. My buddy drove to honduras, survived. I wish I could have joined him. We have driven to southern baja together and lived that time as well. I'll message you his email.

Thanks everyone for your advice/input.

I'll be sure to post about conditions all the way down, sort of like a cyber trail of cookies. If the reports stop, you'll know approximately where I was abducted/murdered. ;)
