I mostly rely on the thin biofilm that I collect on my paddle out at Linda Mar. Seems to work pretty good.

I find the ones that have some form of pastey physical blocker such as zinc oxide or titianium dioxide work best. I think head hunter is the one I've been using for awhile and does have other ingredients besides the oxides though. There are some questions about the long term health effects of the clear chemical sunscreens such as oxybenzone and octinoxate. Overall sunscreen is really poorly regulated in the US and is supposed to get some sort of new rules soon. The whole spf and UVB blocking scales are totally bs. There is this stuff we got for my kids called California Baby that is basically just Titanium dioxide paste in a stick, it works really well and I like the stick applicator for the face.
I actually prefer wearing a hood with a small bill most of the time to keep the sun out of my eyes-especially at OB in afternoon when looking out at the horizon. I use a full sleeve shirt with built in hood for tropics that works really well. I wish I could just find a super thin hood with bill to use in the fall up here that is not attached to a shirt. Let me know if you know of one.

I use REI spy 50 sport sunblock which has yet to fail me...
keeping in mind my missing hair and my Irish genetic code I think that means it's really good...
And it is not all that expensive

I use Ocean Potion Zinc Oxide... works great! As I blue eyed ginger I burn in 2 seconds and the zinc oxide easily lasts a 3-4 hour session.

Kiehl's Vital Sun Protection Lotion SPF 40, for children. Doesn't wash off easily, seems to actually work, and it doesn't make me break out like most others do.

Watermelon scented bullfrog sunscreen. Burns the eyes terribly, but it smells and tastes the best. and yes like the other people who replied I burn easily and I am very caucasian.

Not a user of sunscreen, because of my ethnicity, but do wonder about the chemicals that are used and thus left in the water. Is there such a thing as an 'all natural' or 'anti-pollutant' sunscreen?

Wave glider it's worthy to note that ethnicity and race are not the same, assuming you're talking about skin color

Banana Boat Sport. It's ok but does rub off a bit. I'm looking for something different.

Extreme Elements, except they stopped making it. Only one I've found that does the job and isn't greasy at all.

Well, regarding sunburn, it's all about melanin. As for myself, i'm not very dark but I tan easily and don't burn much - maybe it's got something to do with the Mediterranean genes. But I do wear sunscreen as a preventative during the high UV days - which fall pretty much between late March and early September around here. Banana boat SPF 15 or 30 is fine for me. I'm more concerned with the threat of skin cancer, and as far as sunscreen goes, we seem to get conflicting reports with each new study that comes out. By the way, skin cancer can still occur in people who do not sunburn and have high levels of melanin in their skin. Enough sun exposure can do it to anyone eventually.

Yes, Piss, usually you smell like a $2 whore, but this morning you smelled distinctly of baby powder. Not sure which is worse.

Here's the link to the Environmental Working Group's sunscreen list:
http://breakingnews.ewg.org/2011sunscreen/best-sunscreens/best-beach-spo...
These guys did an incredible amount of work figuring out:
Which Ones Will Not Save You From Skin Cancer
Which Ones Will Save You From Skin Cancer But Give You Some Other Kind Of Cancer
Which Ones Will Save You From Skin Cancer But Were Tested On Fluffy Bunnies
...and so on.
I was shocked at how many major brands (Hawaiian Tropic, for one,) don't do shit.
Long story short (too late, I know,) there's about 10 brands that are worth a damn, some expensive and fancy, some dirt cheap. (Walgreens. Who knew?)
Anyway, check it out. I use something called Blue Lizard, and it works well.

Regarding the question about "natural" sunscreens, the active ingredients of zinc oxide and titanium dioxide are the ones usually considered non-toxic. They are also rated the most effective. Look for high percentages.
Some that I have found to work ok are the Blue Lizard, Beyond Coastal, Headhunter, and old school Zinka.
There is a little video about making your own sunscreen on the Korduroy blog, I haven't tried it, but was thinking about it.
There are also some dietary supplements like lycopene and fern extracts that supposedly help.

I am pretty fair skinned and use California Baby. Works great and doesn't sting the eyes and only has titanium dioxide in it.

Elemental Herbs Sun Stick works great and stays put!!! I hate when the sunscreen runs in my eyes. This stuff is Zinc oxide mixed with beeswax and put into stick form. It is a bit rough to put on (if you get sand in it it doubles as an exfoliating stick) but doesn't melt, run, or cause zits. Biggest problem is getting it off since it's wax. It's great on the back of my hands. For face I use Burn Out clear Zinc sensitive skin formula - no zits, no runs and I don't look like the ghost of a dead albino.
