Grain Surfboards and Dogfish Head Brewery Brew Surfboard-Flavored Beer

2575

It started when a couple of Delaware surfers road-tripped up to Maine for a surf film fest we helped with in Rockland last spring. While visiting the shop, they spied a small trailer that was only half full – basically, the scrap we generated over the entire winter. Kyle and Mark turned out to be from Dogfish Head Brewery, famed for groundbreaking and unique heritage brews – often seasoned with wood.

They quickly decided that the wood left over from our board building would make a perfect accent for a new beer, called “GrainToGlass”, which has been released and can be sampled for a limited time at the Dogfish Head Brewpub in Rehobeth, Delaware. We’ll have a pile of boards up at what should be a great party hosted by Novare Res Bier Cafe in Portland Maine on Sunday, July 25th where we’ll be meeting up with Dogfish founder Sam Calagione and some folks from the brewery to sample a pile of hard-to-find Dogfish beers. If you can’t make it, you can still experience this whole story vicariously when the Discovery Channel program “Brewed” is aired later this year.

Dogfishhead is a great microbrah. Their 60 minute IPA is the shit. The 90 minute is a bit much for me. Tough to come by on draft. I think the Lucky 13 has it.

120 minute is the real deal. I don't think you can get it out here - can you? This is seriously one of the best things in Delaware, besides the screen door factory, of course.

Caught this TV show randomly on Discovery last night and thought it was pretty good. Basically just follows the beer making of Dogfish.

There is a 6 pack store on castro and 15th. They sell individual bottles of a lot of hard to come by brews. I know I saw the 90 minute in there. Dont forget about dupont. Where else would we get our zinc oxide?

Zinc oxide and you - kentucky fried movie.... anybody ?

lounar: don't forget about Punkin Chunkin! But yeah, Dogfish is the best thing to come out of Delaware in ages. My parents live a few blocks from the owner and run into him from time-to-time. Nice guy and has really worked with some interesting people like Sierra to make some great beer.

Also, Whole foods carries some of their beers, including the big bottles occasionally.

When your best surfbreak is Indian River Inlet, you have pleeeeenty of time to focus on brewing good beer. Unfortunately, its so far away and so expensive that its priced the same as Belgians around here.

Oh yeah, Huck, the Punkin' Chunkin! That is some real (s)Lower Delaware style!!! And yes, I do love the dogfish brews, but most of the time I ended up with a killer hangover. Most of them are pretty sweet and hoppy, but I suspect the real reason is that they were $2 per pint twice a week at Homegrown on Main Street in Newark. Good times! (And although the surf is pretty infrequent, there were some gems now and then though hard to score a window. Out here we are used to ask "How are the waves?" but back East you ask "Are there waves?")
