The violent 2009-10 winter storms that battered San Francisco's Ocean Beach and tore up the Great Highway were among the worst on record and have left a legacy that residents may be forced to live with for years to come.
The 30-foot-high waves that pounded the shoreline between S1oat Boulevard and Fort Funston swept away a large swath of beach and bluffs, forcing the closure of the southbound lanes of the Great Highway for most of 2010. The city responded by heaping 425 feet of boulders in front of the bluffs to prevent further damage to the highway and sewage tunnel underneath.
