Great white sharks back in Red Triangle

558

Scientists are all but running giddily into the surf with fancy new gadgetry as the annual migration of great white sharks hits full swing along the Pacific coast and reports flood in about finned beasts lurking in shallow waters.

The ferocious predators have returned to their feeding grounds in the so-called Red Triangle, an area roughly between Monterey Bay, the Farallon Islands and Bodega Head, but sharks have been spotted all along the coast, including a 20-footer seen last weekend next to Moss Landing Harbor.

A "20-footer"? We're going to need a bigger boat.

"Usually, we see them around dolphins, which is an important safety tip because there are still a lot of people who think dolphins make you safe against sharks," Van Sommeran said. "These big sharks eat dolphins."

...oh, wonderful. I was quite fond of that urban myth.

I saw lots of dolphins yesterday. Also this seal/sea lion (I can never tell) thrashing around and snacking on some some salmon just outside the surf line somewhere in Marin. Stay safe and stoked!

Interesting....relating to the quote fatnewt highlighted, is there any documented evidence of Great Whites hunting dolphins? I've never seen photos of dead dolphins on the beach with crescent chunks missing or seen any footage of GW's ever successfully taking out a dolphin from a pod etc... Just a little skeptical of Van Sommeran's observation. I'm obviously quite fond of that urban myth as well. What's next--the zebra stripes I painted on the bottom of my board actually do nothing to deter the landlord either? Where will I draw my false sense of security from?
