Rant - Gulf of the Farallones

Went with the Farallones Marine Sanctuary Association on Sunday out to the Farallon Islands on a whale watching trip. Everybody on-board was amazed by the 70.0 degree and sunny conditions, plus as you know, no swell.

This trip was sentimental since my parents lived on the Farallones for 18-months while my Dad was in the Coast Guard back in the mid 60's. My sister spent the first year and a half of her life out here. I was amazed to see with my own eyes after hearing Farallon stories my whole life. No clue how they did it! Here are some of my personal pics. Everyone was stoked on the Leatherback Turtle.

That's really cool. Thanks for sharing.

Leatherbacks are pretty much the coolest animals on Earth. Hopefully we don't kill them all.

I love how the visibility in Fall just makes this part of the world even more rad.

18 months out there would be really cool...talk about living in the elements. They must have had some really shitty weather days....but days like this would make it all worth it.

Apparently, there is a decent break out there. But even Location Turtle knows better than to go. Doesn't even bother censoring "Farallones".

This article mentions 4 breaks. http://thayerwalker.com/Site/Stories_2_files/TSJ%2017.4%20Farallon%203.p... .
Apparently they've never been surfed in the last 30-40 years according to marine researchers that live there.
They chose to 'mind surf' it instead.
But they did find the formula to surf safely - good swell + wind + orca's in the vicinity to chase out all the landlords..

Whose the landlord's landlord? Is that like a bank or credit union? What color of pajamas do they wear?

I think the article deetr0n referenced appeared in a back issue of The Surfer's Journal. Susan Casey's The Devil's Teeth also contains interesting information about the Farallones, with mention of some breaks, although I find her writing littered with meaningless superlatives that undermine any credibility she may have. http://www.amazon.com/Devils-Teeth-Obsession-Survival-Americas/dp/080507...

Cool pics, 415noe! Thanks for sharing!

Surfing the Farallones would make Ano Nuevo seem like playing in the kiddie pool. Keep the cameras rolling if you do
