Thinking of hiring someone to video me surfing in order to improve.
Know anyone who does this?
I suppose if someone has a video camera with a good zoom and was interested, we could just switch off and video each other in the water.
My wife has done some video for me. I found my pop up was kind of a step up. I also found I need to bend my knees a little more. I think on some moves I look like the Cardiff Kook LMAO!
I have some of them on my FB.
I would do it, if I lived closer : (
Yeah, like recording rehearsals with a band.
Could also try one of those gopro doodads that sticks to your board. Probably better to get the from-beach perspective to see how you're doing in relation to the wave. My schedule is a mess but if you can scare up gear, drop a note I'll shoot you sometime.
Yea...I don't want to see myself surf...ignorance is bliss. In my mind I totally and completely rip. Why shatter the illusion.
I attended Windells snowboard camp at Mt Hood, Oregon and we were filmed every day followed by video review at the end of the day. It was extremely helpful with progression and eliminating mistakes during spin rotation and takeoffs.
As soon as I get a 7D, I'd totally be down to film. Stuck with a 40D right now :( A Go Pro HD should work well though!
Oh yeah, you don't have to be in the water to film your popup. Use a park bench or a chalk outline on the sidewalk.
Sweet, I'll do it!
I bought a Go Pro HD & swim fins not long ago for this very purpose. Filming friends & being filmed is a super fun way to improve & make good out of any surf conditions. Worked great at OB, Mexico, and very recently Hawaii. The Go Pro footage is clear, but you have to be close due to the slight fisheye lens.
Send me an email if your interested (and anyone else for that matter) and we'll work something out! I'm conveniently between jobs at the moment, and have a flexible schedule. I'm only unavailable on super clean long period swells with offshore winds....heheh...

I'd just find someone with a 12x zoom on their point and shoot or a 200mm lens on the DSLR w/video ability (a friend may even have the first). A tripod would probably help, too. OB is probably too far for that kind of thing, but it would be pretty easy at Pacifica. I have a 200mm on my DSLR, but I've never tried it with video. I'll do it first and report back.
@RashGuard -- I kinda agree!
One tip in terms of bending your legs...point your knee inward at an angle. I was simply doing squats when I'd bend my legs when I first started...and if you look at footage of the pros, they all angle their back legs in toward the front leg when they bend. It allows you to keep the weight centered better. I've been working on it for a while now. It also helps with your pop up...
