How to Get More Speed

2597

Jay Writes: This is in response to a recent e-mail asking how to pump a short board while angling down the wave. The writer asks, “I am trying to learn how get more speed to hit the lip becasue the wave keeps breaking before I reach the top. Is pumping as simple as pushing down on the front of the board? I need more speed. Help!”

This is a good question since there is no maneuver in surfing that is possible without speed (except maybe a wipeout). And pumping will give you all the speed you need. You especially need effective pumping when you are surfing small, mushy waves. These tips will help:

1. First thing is to get to your feet as quickly as possible and set your footing. Nothing is worse than watching the wave break on without you as you get your act together on the drop. Therefore, the second you feel the wave lifting you, jump to your feet and put your eyes on that point down the line you are aiming for. If the wave is small, aim your board down the line before getting to the bottom (If it’s bigger, you’ll have to get to the trough of the wave first and then make you turn down the line).

And for those seeking more of the same an Ozzie just put together a surf coaching website: http://www.surfcoach.com/. (edit) His site isn't the typical paddle-paddle-clap absurdity that currently passes for surf "coaching". It's actually got substantive tips with the goal being to develop skills for competition surfing.

I have seen that guy ripping the SurfJet out in B****w***d. Hey its less than an SUP!!
Seriously though I would also recommend using a quad or twin fin in really mushy stuff.

When I want more speed, I just go down to Santa Cruz and buy some meth of one of the guys in the lineup at Steamer Lane.

If you need to "pump" you need a longboard.

Mommy says every time someone pumps his shortboard, a new baby whitey is born.

(Full disclosure: I've personally spawned 1,000's of whiteys this summer.)

If you need a longboard then you need an Orchestra too LOL!
Most swing the back arm (left arm goofy foot, right arm regular) in a forward circle or something close to that when pumping. When the arm swings up you are more extended from pushing down with your legs. as your arm swings forward to down the board comes back under you (knees bent) and ready to push and extend again (Arm swinging). If you do this right you will feel the speed. Kind of like pumping a skateboard for speed. The motion is close to the same.
How is that? LOL!
I thought "roller coster" was a term used in the 70's. At least we used it in So Cal back then.
I don't know who is who. I have been away for to many years. I know a few names now but I never have been into the who is who stuff in any sport. I just like to play.
