If you surf, be prepared to die

ONE of WA's most renowned boardriders says our waters are now so shark-infested that every surfer should be "prepared to die" if they paddle out.

Big-wave surfing legend Geoff "Camel" Goulden rescued 34-year-old holiday-maker Jon Hines after the civil servant from Newcastle was bitten on the arm and stomach as the pair surfed Red Bluff, 160km north of Carnarvon, on Tuesday afternoon.

Speaking from his camp site at Red Bluff yesterday, Mr Goulden, 40, said: "Surfing has become a very dangerous sport. If you spend a lot of time in the water, you have to admit that surfing has become really, really dangerous in the shark-infested waters you now have in WA.

"If you surf, you have to be prepared for the possibility you'll be attacked. There's quite a good chance of that happening.

100% of people who surf will die. Surfing causes death. That's just basic logic.

In addition to sharks, watch out for WATER!

@mad & pup, funny! But from the safety of our norcal perch where we usually only get a handful of encounters, not even attacks, necessarily, a year...the jokes come easier, don't they? I'm stuck somewhere between sympathy and derision for our WA bros...between, 'what a drag every session to paddle out with sharkmind' and 'boo hoo hoo the mean old sharks won't let me play in the ocean'. The Ozzie says, "seems like there are plenty of them now", so as always, arrogant man will be the decider for what is too few...or too many.

I have no sympathy for this guy or the situation Down Under.

#1 - We are guests in their habitat. This wanker wants to kill sharks so he can catch waves stress-free.
#2 - Is it an increase in sharks that are the problem or any increase in people invading shark territory that is the issue? I would argue the latter is more of a problem.
#3 - I make jokes because I feel that dying is somewhat out of our control (not to be confused with prevented). And things like killing sharks will make surfers safer in the water are ridiculous, unscientific claims. This guy will probably lead a charge to kill a bunch of sharks then get killed in a car accident on the way to the beach. Arrogant is right!

It's their ocean, not ours

"It's their ocean, not ours." I've always been curious about that line, ufo....about the oversimplicity of it...and not just from you, but whenever it's used. Granted, the fish inhabit the ocean, but we use it for food, transportation, and a thousand other things that are basic for our survival too. Isn't the ocean ours in as much as the land is ours? Don't we just need to learn to share it with the other species and to a better and wiser use of both earth and ocean..some sort of balanced coexistence? (not calling you out, just ruminating)
