Rant - IS IT BETTER GOING IN OR OUT???

I was arguing with a buddy about the best time to surf OB. I think that it's better as the tide drains out from mid to low and he seems to think that it's better as it fills in. (He ain't from these parts). I tried explaining that Linda Mar works better on an incoming tide but OB doesn't follow the same formula. My guess is that this will be different at each spot and the tide swing and level will also play a part. In general terms/average conditions what do you think is the better side of the tide to be on???

I just know it sucks (pun intended) to paddle against a southbound current when you're in the water from a 6ft high to a -0.1 low.

Lower tide is usually better. I think it gets more top to bottom on a lower tide...which is good if you can make 'em....but I'm old...so sometimes I like to paddle out on a higher tide because it's just easier. With that said however...sometimes it just won't work with a high tide.

You're friend is a Kook. Tell him to only surf at +6 high tides or to quit.

FWIW, this rant should have been titled "innie or outie". Just sayin'

I like it at approximately 1.67 ft. outgoing during a waxing gibbous. Anything else is just a waste of my time.

Sadly, work determines 5 days out of 7 when I can surf, so that means I surf on whatever tide I get.

Your friend is hella wrong.

On second thought, if he is talking about coming off a really low tide when the sandbars are drained, then yes the conditions will improve somewhat.

I've had bonafide good surf on both a 6' high tide and a minus low. Go figure.

The more I think about it ....Wind is more of a factor for us than anything else and swell direction.

I like it going in and out. Preferably preceded by a HotTug.
