This time, Jay probably wouldn't go.
An "extra large" swell expected to hit Hawaii on Thursday and California on Saturday has raised rumors and hopes that a couple of big wave surf contests could be held this week. Yet for the one held near Half Moon Bay -- newly reorganized, and renamed The Jay at Maverick's Big Wave Invitational after all-conditions charger Jay Moriarity of Santa Cruz -- the chances are getting slimmer as the storm draws nearer.
"This might be the biggest swell of the whole waiting period, but everyone doesn't want to run it just to run it," he said. "We'd like to treat it like the Eddie, where it's not important to run it every year, it's important to run it when you want to run it."
