The Kelly Slater surfboard quiver for Bells Beach

1889

What is Kelly Slater preparing for Bells Beach? The answer might be written on the surfboard quiver. The Floridian asked Channel Islands for six boards. Here they are.

At a first glance, they could all look very similar, but that's not true. He is looking for well overhead waves, so small details make the difference.

"This year, Kelly has spread out his quiver a little bit — not necessarily in length but in widths. All boards with slight concave decks", explains Al Merrick.

The environment thanks Kelly for his consideration. I'm sorry, but this is retarded. Does he win contests because of his skill, or because of a 1/8 or 1/4 inch nuance in his board's width?

I can imagine having a good variety of 6 or 7 boards that could be used for a season or so, for all surf spots. For example, here's a picture of Mark Richards and his entire quiver in 1979. To have 6 boards shaped specifically for one contest suggests that Kelly goes through 100 or more boards a year, which is obscene.

It's not like Bells is a super-technical spot or anything.

tang-. Kelly is the best surfer in the world and a master of surfboard design. He knows what he needs and there is a long waiting list for any of his used boards.

I don't think these boards will ever wind up in a landfill. I reckon he's either giving them away to local groms or auctioning them off for charity. I'd be stoked to hang one of Slater's boards on my wall.

This whole discussion would be a hell of a lot more interesting if it were about KS's hairstyle compared to MR's. My conclusion? A mullet will only get you 4 world championships.

@tang I was stoked to see that about half of these boards are eps which I know from experience will last much much longer and is slightly less toxic overall

for everyone's reference - one 7 pound surfboard generates approximately 14 pounds of toxic waste. that means that k3lly's quiver represents about 84 pounds of toxic waste added to the biosphere - all for one surf spot for one contest. that doesn't count all the driving/flying etc. surfers do to get to surf spots. if i were a lot smarter, i would be a "green" chemist, and find some way of making biodegradable surfboard foam/glass, etc. i don't know about others here, but i do think it is important that we take a look at our actions, and at least recognize that we create consequences with our choices. it feels pretty bad knowing that our sport does so much damage environmentally. BTW i'm not trying to disown my own actions and contributions to the toxic soup - to the contrary i recognize them all too well. anybody here know of some viable alternatives they would like to share?

surfers are blind. skiers are blind. aviators are blind. divers are blind. fisherman are blind. sex is the only true athletic, environmentally safe sport.
