Surfing legend Kelly Slater claimed his record 50th Assn. of Surfing Professional World Championship Tour event Thursday by winning the Hurley Pro at Trestles event held near San Clemente.

By a final score of 16.50 to 14, the 40-year-old Slater defeated 31-year-old Australian Joel Parkinson in the final to win $105,000. It's the fifth time Slater has won the Hurley Pro.

The event, held at San Onofre State Beach, is the sixth of 10 ASP WCT events this year. With the victory, Slater has made a strong push toward a record 12th world title.

It's Slater's second WCT win in three events, and he's now in third place (35,450 points) in the tour rankings behind Parkinson (39,700 points) and Australian Mick Fanning (41,250 points).
